Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the Boardroom

The morning sun cast long, golden rays across the polished mahogany conference room on the forty-fifth floor of the Santos Tower. The room was deathly silent, save for the hum of the centralized ventilation system. Seated around the massive conference table were the remaining members of the board of directors, their faces pale and drawn, looking like mourners at a premature funeral. At the head of the table, in the high-backed leather chair traditionally reserved for the chief executive officer, sat Elena. She wore a simple black blazer over her white V-neck blouse, her long dark hair pulled back into a sleek, elegant chignon. Her expression was serene, composed, and utterly commanding.

Before her lay a pristine leather folder and the familiar black fountain pen she had used to sign her divorce papers just days ago.

Arthur Pendelton, the senior board member and Marco's former mentor, cleared his throat nervously, sliding a thick stack of documents across the polished wood toward her.

"Elena... Mrs. Santos," Arthur began, his voice trembling slightly as he avoided meeting her direct gaze. "The emergency restructuring of the board has been finalized. With Marco remanded without bail and the federal freeze orders in effect, the corporation requires immediate stabilization. We are... we are entirely at your disposal."

Elena did not touch the documents immediately. She rested her hands lightly on either side of the folder, her fingers interlaced, her dark eyes sweeping slowly across the faces of the terrified executives sitting before her.

"Stabilization," Elena repeated, her voice carrying a calm, chilling weight that commanded absolute attention. "Is that what you call covering up years of systemic embezzlement, Arthur? Were you stabilizing the company when you approved those fraudulent shell company transfers, or were you simply securing your own retirement packages?"

Arthur flinched, pulling his hands back as if the table had suddenly grown hot. "We were acting under direct orders from the CEO! Marco threatened to terminate anyone who questioned his accounting methods!"

"A weak excuse for men who pride themselves on being corporate titans," Elena replied smoothly. She picked up the black pen, twirling it once between her fingers before laying it neatly across the top of the folder. "I have reviewed every signature, every board resolution, and every financial ledger from the past five years. Every single one of you knew what Marco was doing. You chose complicity over integrity because the dividends were too lucrative to ignore."

A younger board member, a junior vice president named Julian, leaned forward, desperation creeping into his tone. "Elena, please. If the public finds out about the extent of these financial irregularities, the stock will plummet to zero. The company will fold within forty-eight hours, and thousands of innocent employees will lose their livelihoods. Surely you don't want that."

Elena paused. She looked down at her rounded belly for a brief, imperceptible second before raising her eyes back to meet Julian's.

"I care deeply about the employees of this company, Julian," Elena said, her tone softening just a fraction, though the steel in her voice remained intact. "Which is why, as the new majority shareholder holding absolute voting control, I have already instituted a comprehensive restructuring plan."

Arthur frowned, leaning forward cautiously. "What kind of restructuring plan?"

Elena opened the leather folder, revealing a single, pristine sheet of paper bearing her signature at the bottom.

"Effective immediately, all executive bonuses are rescinded," Elena announced clearly. "Every dollar of ill-gotten capital recovered from Marco's offshore accounts will be funneled directly back into the employee pension fund. And as for the board..." She paused, letting her gaze linger on each terrified man in turn. "...every single one of you is tendering your resignation, effective immediately, to be replaced by independent auditors and legal trustees appointed by my family's estate."
