Chapter 7 - The Inheritance Trap

The interrogation room of the central precinct was a bleak box of cinderblock walls painted a dismal shade of industrial green. A single overhead fluorescent fixture hummed with a low, agonizing frequency, casting a harsh glare down onto a dented metal table. Marco sat slumped in a bolted-down steel chair, the handcuffs removed but his hands still trembling as he clutched a paper cup of lukewarm water. Across the table sat Detective Ramos, a veteran investigator with tired eyes and a thick file folder spread open before him. Ramos flipped a page, the rustle of paper sounding like thunder in the small room.

"Your corporate partners are falling over themselves to pin the entire operation on you, Mr. Santos," Ramos said, leaning forward and resting his forearms on the table. "Chloe Vance was picked up at NAIA terminal three an hour ago trying to board a flight to Zurich. She had three million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds in her carry-on bag."

Marco stared blankly down into his paper cup, watching the water ripple from the vibrations of the building. "She... she was just an employee," he muttered, his voice hollow.

"An employee who listed you as her sole financial benefactor and emergency contact on every single offshore account document recovered by federal agents," Ramos countered, raising an eyebrow. "Her lawyers are already cutting a deal. She gives you up completely in exchange for a reduced sentence and witness protection. You're taking the fall for the whole syndicate, Marco. And judging by the scale of the fraud, you're looking at a minimum of twenty years behind bars."

Marco clenched his jaw, the taste of copper flooding his mouth. "My wife... my ex-wife set this up. She manipulated the data. She orchestrated the entire thing to frame me."

Ramos let out a dry, humorless laugh, shaking his head slowly. "Your ex-wife's legal team provided us with an airtight forensic timeline that predates your relationship with Ms. Vance by nearly four years. Furthermore, we received a supplementary filing from the Santos family estate executors an hour ago."

Marco snapped his head up, panic flaring in his eyes. "What filing?"

"Your father's estate," Ramos said steadily. "Upon reviewing the ongoing federal investigation into your corporate activities, the primary executors exercised a moral clause in your father's original will. Since you have been formally charged with grand larceny and corporate malfeasance, your entire inheritance—including the trust fund, the ancestral properties, and your controlling shares in the family holding firm—has been legally revoked."

Marco stood up so violently that his steel chair scraped loudly against the concrete floor, screeching through the room. "They can't do that! That's my birthright! That's my family's legacy!"

"It was your family's legacy," Ramos corrected, slamming the file folder shut with a resounding thwack. "Now, it's being transferred in its entirety to the sole surviving legal heir of the primary lineage, currently represented by Elena Santos and her unborn child."

Marco stood frozen, his chest heaving as the walls of the tiny room seemed to close in around him. Every asset, every dollar, every shred of social standing he had spent a lifetime accumulating, stealing, and hoarding had been completely wiped away in less than twenty-four hours.

"Sit down, Mr. Santos," Ramos ordered quietly, pointing a finger at the steel chair. "We have a few more questions about the shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands, and your time is running out."
