Chapter 6 - The Confiscation

The subterranean parking garage smelled of exhaust fumes and damp concrete, illuminated only by the harsh, flickering fluorescent tubes overhead. The red and blue strobe lights of the parked police cruiser painted frantic colored patterns across the concrete pillars. Two officers guided Marco toward the rear passenger door of the squad car, his expensive black suit jacket rumpled and stained with sweat. His wrists burned where the steel handcuffs bit into his skin. As they pushed him down into the cramped backseat, a flash of motion near the structural columns caught his eye.

Leaning against the driver's side door of her own silver sedan was Elena. She was illuminated by the eerie police lights, her white V-neck blouse stark against the gloom, looking entirely out of place in the gritty underworld of the building.

Marco leaned across the middle of the backseat, pressing his face against the slightly lowered window of the police cruiser.

"Elena! Listen to me!" Marco yelled, his voice cracking with desperation as an officer reached inside to pull him back. "You can't leave me here! We have a history! We built this life together!"

Elena walked slowly toward the cruiser, her footsteps clicking rhythmically against the concrete floor. She stopped a few feet away, keeping a safe and deliberate distance, her long dark hair swaying gently with each movement. She looked down at him not with anger, but with a profound, terrifying indifference.

"We built a life on a foundation of sand, Marco," Elena said quietly, her voice cutting easily through the hum of the cruiser's engine. "You chose to build it on deceit, theft, and the exploitation of everyone around you. I simply removed the foundation."

"The authorities are going to look into your accounts too!" Marco threatened, his voice dropping to a harsh, venomous whisper. "You signed those corporate documents! You were the treasurer on paper for the first two years! If I go down for embezzlement, they'll drag you down right beside me!"

Elena let out a soft, low chuckle, the sound entirely devoid of humor. She reached into the pocket of her tailored trousers and pulled out a small, heavy legal binder wrapped in a red ribbon. She held it up for him to see through the glass.

"You truly believe I didn't plan for that contingency, don't you?" Elena asked, her dark eyes flashing in the strobe light. "Every single document bearing my signature as treasurer was countersigned under explicit duress, backed by notarized affidavits and medical records detailing the physical and emotional intimidation you subjected me to during those years."

Marco's eyes widened in horror. "You... you recorded everything?"

"From day one," Elena confirmed smoothly. "My father's legal team filed those protective disclosures with the Department of Justice eighteen months ago, timed to release automatically the moment my signature hit a divorce decree or a federal freeze order was initiated. Legally, I am classified as an uncooperative victim turned whistleblower under state protection statutes. I walk away completely clean, Marco. You, on the other hand, walk away with a prison cell."

Before Marco could formulate a response, the officer slammed the cruiser door shut, cutting off the sound of her voice. The heavy thud echoed loudly in the cavernous garage. Marco pressed his palms against the tinted glass, watching through the red and blue flashes as Elena turned her back on him, walked over to her silver sedan, and slid gracefully into the driver's seat.

As the police cruiser shifted into gear and began to roll forward toward the ramp leading up to the street, Marco caught one final glimpse in the side mirror. Elena's car remained parked in the shadows, its engine idling, waiting for him to disappear entirely from her world.
