Chapter 3 - The Frozen Account

The piercing chime of the smartphone notification cut through the heavy cabin air like a razor blade. Marco lunged for the console, his fingers trembling as he snatched the phone from the cup holder. The screen illuminated his pale, sweat-slicked face with a harsh blue glow. Bold red letters flashed across the display: ACCESS DENIED. ACCOUNT FROZEN PENDING SECURITY AUDIT. He swiped frantically, trying to bypass the lock screen, but the interface stubbornly remained frozen on a mandatory verification prompt requesting a biometric override that only Elena possessed.
Marco stared at the screen, his breath hitching in his throat. He looked sideways at Elena, who continued to stare serenely out the windshield at the endless stream of brake lights.
"What did you do?" Marco whispered, his voice cracking with a vulnerability he had never intended to show. "What the hell did you do, Elena?"
Elena slowly rotated the black pen between her fingers, the metallic click the only sound in the tense interior of the car. She did not look at him; her gaze remained fixed on the horizon, where the sun was beginning to dip below the smog-choked skyline of the financial district.
"I simply reclaimed what was mine from the very beginning," Elena said evenly, her tone devoid of malice, sounding more like a judge delivering a final verdict. "You built your little empire on capital borrowed from my family's estate, Marco. You hid it behind shell companies, offshore accounts, and falsified ledgers. But you made one fatal mistake."
"I made no mistakes," Marco barked, though the conviction in his voice had entirely evaporated. He tried to dial his chief financial officer, but the call failed instantly, replaced by an automated recording stating that the corporate line had been disconnected. "This is illegal! I will call the authorities! I will have you arrested for extortion!"
"Go ahead," Elena replied, a faint, humorless smile touching the corners of her lips. "Call them. Tell the authorities that your pregnant wife froze the funds you illegally diverted from her personal trust fund. Explain to the federal investigators why your signature appears on documents transferring corporate assets to your mistress's personal account in the Cayman Islands."
Marco froze. The phone slipped from his lax fingers, clattering onto the rubber floor mat. The blood drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking hollowed out, an expensive suit draped over a crumbling shell of a man.
"How... how do you know about Chloe?" Marco breathed, the name slipping out of his mouth before he could stop it.
Elena finally turned her head fully toward him. The look in her eyes was not one of heartbreak or betrayal, but of absolute, clinical detachment.

"I knew about Chloe before you even bought her that apartment in BGC," Elena said softly, raising the pen once more. "And by tomorrow morning, when you check your corporate headquarters, you'll realize she's already emptied whatever scraps you left her and boarded a flight to Zurich."
