Chapter 5 - The Midnight Knock

The heavy oak door of the penthouse shuddered under the force of a sharp, authoritative pounding from the outside. Marco stood frozen in the middle of the minimalist living room, his hands trembling violently at his sides. The silence of the apartment was shattered completely by the second round of knocks, louder and more insistent than the first. He looked toward the entryway where Elena had disappeared minutes earlier, but the hallway remained pitch black and empty. The reality of her parting words settled over him like a lead blanket. You have a knock at your door downstairs. I suggest you answer it.
Marco swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. He dragged his feet across the imported marble floor, each step feeling heavier than the last, as if gravity itself was conspiring to keep him from reaching the door.
He reached out, his slick fingers fumbling with the smart lock before he finally twisted the handle and pulled the heavy portal open.
Standing in the dimly lit hallway were two men in dark, tailored suits, their expressions carved from the same stone of absolute official authority. Behind them stood a uniformed police officer, a clipboard tucked neatly under his arm.
"Mr. Marco Santos?" the lead investigator asked, flashing a gold badge that caught the harsh overhead light.
Marco tried to speak, but his vocal cords refused to cooperate. He could only offer a faint, involuntary nod.
"We have a warrant for your arrest," the investigator continued, his voice monotone and procedural. "You are being detained for questioning regarding corporate fraud, embezzlement, money laundering, and the falsification of financial documents. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
Before Marco could utter a single word in defense, the cold steel of handcuffs clamped down tightly around his wrists, snapping shut with a metallic click that echoed down the long hallway. The shock of the cold metal sent a jolt of adrenaline through his system, breaking his paralysis.
"There's been a mistake!" Marco protested, his voice rising in panic as the officers gently but firmly pulled him backward across the threshold. "My lawyers... call my lawyers! This is a corporate dispute, it's not a criminal matter!"
"Your legal representation has already recused themselves, Mr. Santos," the officer replied smoothly, guiding him toward the private elevator. "They filed motions of withdrawal thirty minutes ago upon reviewing the prosecution's unsealed asset forfeiture files."
Marco thrashed weakly against their grip, his eyes darting frantically down the corridor in a desperate search for his wife.
"Elena!" Marco screamed at the top of his lungs, his voice echoing off the concrete walls of the stairwell. "Elena, you can't do this to me! Help me!"

The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime, revealing a completely empty car waiting to take him down to the subterranean garage where a police cruiser idled with its red and blue lights flashing against the concrete pillars. As the heavy steel doors began to close, cutting off his view of the penthouse hallway, a soft rustle of fabric caught his attention. Elena stood leaning against the living room wall just around the corner, watching him descend with an expression of chilling, absolute tranquility. She raised her right hand, holding up the black pen in a silent farewell salute, just as the digital display above the elevator flashed G and the doors locked shut.
