Chapter 10 - The Secret Meeting

The private dining room of an exclusive downtown restaurant was bathed in warm, amber light, far removed from the cold sterility of the corporate towers and police precincts. The room was soundproofed, private, and secure—a favored haunt for the city's elite when clandestine arrangements needed to be made away from prying eyes. Elena sat alone at the center of a circular table set for two, sipping a glass of sparkling water. The door swung open silently, and a tall, elegant woman stepped into the room. It was Chloe Vance, Marco’s mistress, wearing a dark trench coat and looking visibly shaken, her designer handbag clutched tightly against her chest like a shield.
Chloe hesitated at the threshold, her eyes darting toward the empty seat opposite Elena.
"Sit down, Chloe," Elena said, her voice soft, unthreatening, but carrying an unmistakable authority that compelled obedience.
Chloe swallowed hard, walking over slowly and taking a seat. She placed her bag on the floor, her hands trembling as she rested them on the edge of the white tablecloth.
"I didn't want any of this," Chloe began defensively, her voice tight with anxiety. "Marco told me his divorce was finalized months ago. He promised me we were going to start a new life together in Europe."
Elena did not interrupt. She took a slow sip of her water, set the glass down with a delicate clink, and looked steadily across the table at the younger woman.
"Marco makes a lot of promises, Chloe," Elena said evenly. "He promised the board of directors absolute loyalty. He promised his family an unblemished legacy. And he promised you a future funded by money he stole from my family's trust."
Chloe flinched, looking down at her manicured fingernails. "The federal agents... they seized everything at the airport. My accounts are frozen, my passport is flagged, and Marco's uncle told me I'm on my own."
"Your uncle-in-law gave you accurate advice for once," Elena replied smoothly. She reached into her leather folder, pulled out a single manila envelope, and slid it across the table toward Chloe.
Chloe stared at the envelope suspiciously. "What is this?"
"It's a one-way ticket to a destination of your choosing outside of Southeast Asia, along with a modest stipend deposited into an unlinked foreign account," Elena said quietly.
Chloe's eyes widened in disbelief. She looked up from the envelope to Elena's calm, composed face. "You're... you're letting me go? You're not having me arrested?"
"I have no interest in destroying you, Chloe," Elena said, leaning back slightly in her chair and resting her hand gently on her abdomen. "You were a pawn in Marco's game of endless greed and deceit, just as I was for a very long time. The difference is that I woke up before the check cleared, and you stayed until the account was emptied."
Chloe reached out with trembling fingers and pulled the envelope toward her, lifting the flap to reveal the airline ticket and a secure banking access card.
"Why are you doing this?" Chloe whispered, tears welling up in her eyes for the first time. "After everything Marco and I did... why show me mercy?"
Elena stood up slowly from the table, gathering her coat and preparing to leave. She looked down at Chloe with a look of profound, quiet strength.
May you like
"This isn't mercy, Chloe," Elena said softly, turning toward the private exit. "It's closure. And by sunrise tomorrow, you will be gone from this city, and Marco will finally learn what it means to stand entirely alone."
