Chapter 8: The Broken Heirlooms

By month two, the nature of Carter’s work began to shift.

Every Tuesday, the restoration center opened its doors to the local community. Elderly residents, factory workers, and young families brought in broken family heirlooms—pocket watches passed down from grandfathers, pocket-sized music boxes, and vintage mantel clocks that had long stopped ticking.

Julian’s foundation repaired them all free of charge.

Carter was assigned to the intake desk. His job was to listen to the owners and record the history of each item.

An elderly woman named Maria placed a battered, scratched silver pocket watch on the counter. The glass crystal was cracked, and the winding crown was completely seized.

"My husband carried this during the sanitation strikes in seventy-six," Maria said softly, her hands trembling as she touched the faded silver casing. "He passed away last month. I don't care if it looks pretty, son. I just want to hear it tick again. It sounds like his heartbeat."

Carter looked at the worn, inexpensive watch. In his former life, he would have mocked it as cheap scrap not worth fifty dollars.

Now, looking into Maria’s tear-filled eyes, he felt a tight knot form in his throat.

"We’ll fix it, ma'am," Carter said, his voice surprisingly gentle. "I’ll make sure it runs like new."
