Chapter 10: The Echo of the Past

When Maria returned the following Tuesday, Carter personally handed her the restored pocket watch.

The silver case had been polished to a warm glow, the cracked glass replaced with custom mineral crystal, and inside, the old mechanism hummed with steady precision.

Maria held the watch against her ear. As the rhythmic ticking filled the space between them, tears rolled down her weathered cheeks. She reached across the counter and wrapped both of her hands around Carter’s grease-stained fingers.

"Thank you, son," she whispered. "You gave me back a piece of my life."

After she left, Carter stood by the window, looking out at the gray city streets.

Julian walked up, carrying two paper cups of black coffee, and handed one to him.

"How does that feel compared to getting a hundred thousand views?" Julian asked quietly.

Carter looked down at his calloused hands. "It feels... heavy. In a good way. Like what I did actually mattered to someone."

He paused, looking over at Julian with genuine remorse. "I was an idiot that day at the boutique, Julian. I thought having money meant I was better than everyone else. But I was just empty."

Julian took a sip of his coffee. "Money is just stored energy, Carter. What matters is the direction you choose to release it."
