Chapter 13: The Masterpiece

Six months had passed since the incident at the boutique.
The winter chill gave way to warm April sunshine, filtering through the clean skylights of the Vance Restoration Lab.
Carter stood before the central assembly bench. On the black velvet mat lay a project he had spent the last two months working on under Julian’s direct mentorship: an original desk chronometer, built entirely from recycled steel and refurbished vintage movements.
The brass plates were hand-beveled. The blued-steel hands were shaped with manual files. Every single gear had been measured, polished, and fitted by Carter’s own hands.
Marcus Sterling arrived from Manhattan, carrying the same leather folio he had held six months prior. Alongside him was an older gentleman with silver hair, sharp observant eyes, and an understated navy blazer—Arthur Hayes, Carter’s father.
Arthur looked at his son, noticing the lean strength in Carter’s posture, the clear focus in his eyes, and the quiet dignity he now carried.
"Your father came to see your final evaluation, Carter," Julian said, stepping back to let the work speak for itself.
Carter wound the mainspring with the winding key he had machined himself.
He released the lever.
