Chapter 14: The True Measure
Arthur Hayes stood before the workbench, his eyes fixed on the moving mechanism.
He slowly reached out, his fingertips grazing the polished brass casing. When he looked up at his son, his eyes were moist.
"For twenty years, Carter, I gave you money because I was too busy to give you my time," Arthur said, his voice thick with emotion. "I thought providing luxury was my job as a father. I failed to teach you what makes life meaningful."
"You didn't fail, Dad," Carter said softly, shaking his head. "I was just choosing not to see it. I thought your success was mine by default. I know better now."
Arthur pulled Carter into a tight, quiet embrace. For the first time in their lives, the distance between them—built on high-priced gifts and empty status—dissolved completely.
Marcus stepped forward and presented Julian with a document. "The probation terms are fully fulfilled, Mr. Julian. Mr. Carter Hayes has completed four hundred hours of vocational apprenticeship and seventy successful restorations."
Julian took the paper and signed his name at the bottom.
"Contract fulfilled," Julian announced.
