Chapter 9: Sifting Through the Ashes

By sunrise, the rain had stopped, leaving the morning sky a muted, reflective gray. Sirens blared in the distance as three police cruisers and an ambulance navigated the winding driveway of the Vance estate.

Officers escorted Thomas Vance away in handcuffs, his face bruised and his career destroyed. Detectives carefully cataloged the leather ledgers, the stolen codicil, and the poisoned unicorn cup as criminal evidence.

In the sunroom, Dr. Mercer conducted a final examination of Emma. "Her vitals are completely normal. She has a strong constitution, Julian. She will make a full recovery."

Claire hugged Emma tightly, kissing the top of her head. "Thank God."

Julian stood near the garden doorway, watching Eleanor sit quietly on the patio bench, wrapped in a warm wool blanket. She looked fragile, exhausted, but for the first time in twenty-five years, undeniably free.

Rachel walked up beside Julian, handing him a cup of black coffee. "I'm sorry for reacting defensively earlier, Julian. I was terrified."

Julian offered a faint, apologetic nod. "I let paranoia cloud my judgment. Fear makes monsters of us all."

"What are you going to do now?" Rachel asked softly. "When those ledgers become public, the company’s reputation will be ruined. The stock will crash."

Julian looked down at his coffee, his reflection rippling in the dark surface. "Let it burn. You can't build a future on a foundation of stolen lives."
