Chapter 1: The Anatomy of a Lie

The grandfather clock in the foyer struck midnight, its heavy chimes echoing through the vaulted ceiling of the Vance estate. On the hardwood floor, little Emma lay limp, her pale pink dress fanning out around her like fallen petals. Julian Vance gripped the unicorn cup, his knuckles turning white. The faint scent of bitter almonds still lingered around its ceramic rim.
"Call an ambulance, Julian! Now!" Claire screamed from the floor, her fingers desperately checking her daughter’s faint pulse.
Julian didn’t move immediately. His cold, dark eyes remained fixed on Rachel. "Cyanide derivative. A micro-dose," he whispered, stepping closer to his sister-in-law. "Enough to paralyze, maybe stop a six-year-old’s heart within an hour if untreated. You poured this punch, Rachel. Why?"
Rachel backed against the antique sideboard, her crystal glass trembling in her hands until the amber liquid inside sloshed over her fingers. "I didn't put anything in it! Julian, I swear on my life, I poured it straight from the crystal bowl your father sent!"
"My father is dead," Julian replied, his voice deadly quiet. "And his will is being read tomorrow."
Claire lifted Emma into her arms, tears streaking her face. "Stop interrogating her and save our daughter!"
Julian snapped out of his trance, pulled out his phone, and dialed his private physician. "Dr. Mercer, get the pediatric toxicology kit and come to the estate right now. It happened again."
Rachel gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "What do you mean... *again*?"

Julian didn't answer. He knelt beside Claire, gently brushing Emma’s blonde hair away from her damp forehead. Beneath the ruthless facade of the Vance empire's sole heir, a crack of profound terror showed. He knew the legacy of the Vance family was built on blood, but he had sworn his innocent daughter would never pay the price.
