Chapter 5: Shadows in the Rain

The revelation hung over the grand hall like a suffocating shroud. Julian stood paralyzed. All his life, he had prided himself on expanding the Vance legacy, believing his father was a visionary philanthropist. To learn that his family's vast fortune was built on stolen medicine and shattered lives struck him like a physical blow.
"Where is she now, Martha?" Julian asked, his voice shaking with restrained agony. "Where is my mother?"
"She was released two weeks ago," Mrs. Gable whispered. "When Arthur passed away, the legal conservatorship ended. But she is not alone, Julian. Someone helped her orchestrate tonight."

"Julian!" Claire cried out, gripping Emma in the dark.

The beam caught a figure standing at the far end of the long dining table. A woman dressed in a rain-soaked black coat, her silver hair clinging to her cheeks, her eyes burning with an unsettling, fierce lucidity. In her hand, she held the missing leather ledger from Arthur’s safe.

"Hello, Julian," the woman said, her voice raspy from decades of silence. "You have your father’s eyes. Let us hope you didn't inherit his soul."
