Chapter 7 - The Corporate Collusion

The cast-iron skillet felt heavy in Julian’s hand, but the weight of the betrayal was infinitely heavier. He stood in the dim infrared glow of the kitchen, staring at Marcus Vance as the pieces of a much larger, more sinister puzzle slammed violently into place.

"Working together is such a crude way to put it, Julian," Marcus said, walking smoothly toward the center of the kitchen. He brushed a speck of dust off his tailored overcoat with agonizing nonchalance. "Think of it as a hostile takeover—both of your company and of your domestic arrangements. You've always been a brilliant engineer, Julian. You write incredible code, you design bulletproof hardware. But you have a fundamental blind spot when it comes to human leverage."

"You hacked my home network," Julian said, his voice dropping into a harsh, vibrating whisper. He kept Lily securely tucked behind him, shielding her from Marcus's cold gaze. "You and Vanessa... you planned this from the beginning. The dinner party tonight, the dropped plate, the staged argument—it was all a setup to force a custody crisis so I'd be too distracted to notice the corporate acquisition papers moving through the legal queue."

Vanessa pushed off the kitchen island, walking over to stand beside Marcus. The contrast between her vibrant green dress and his dark overcoat looked like a portrait of calculated malice. She didn't look at Julian; instead, she reached out and casually straightened Marcus's collar, a gesture of chilling intimacy.

"You were going to tank the company valuation, Julian, by refusing to sign over the proprietary rights to the smart-home security patents," Vanessa said, her tone devoid of any lingering emotion. "Marcus needed sole ownership of the architecture to secure the government defense contracts. But you wouldn't budge. You said the technology was too dangerous for mass surveillance."

"Because it is dangerous," Julian retorted, his anger surging past his fear. "The system I built has a back-end surveillance loop that can't be safely scaled without violating basic privacy laws. That's why I locked the patents away!"

"And that's why we had to find a way to remove you from the equation," Marcus added smoothly, sliding his hands into his coat pockets. "An unstable founder embroiled in a domestic abuse scandal caught on his own security cameras? The board will vote you out by sunrise tomorrow morning for 'gross moral turpitude.' The patent rights automatically revert to the corporate holding entity under the founder's default clause. Clean, legal, and absolute."

Lily let out a sharp, frightened sob, unable to process the adult words but sensing the absolute malice in the room. "Daddy, make them leave. I want to go home."

"This is our home, Lily," Vanessa said softly, taking a step forward.

"Stay back!" Julian shouted, raising the cast-iron skillet as a physical barrier. His eyes darted around the kitchen, looking for any possible exit strategy. The pantry was a dead end; the front door was blocked by Marcus; the windows were ballistic glass. They had him completely cornered.

Marcus sighed, shaking his head with mild disappointment. "Don't be dramatic, Julian. You can't fight math, and you certainly can't fight a legally binding corporate contract. Just hand over the emergency administrative keycard from your wallet, sign the board resignation papers on your phone, and we'll let you walk out of here with your dignity intact. You can even see Lily on weekends—supervised, of course."

Julian stared at Marcus, his mind racing at a million miles an hour. He knew that if he handed over the administrative keycard, they would lock him out of the company servers forever, rendering him powerless to stop the military-grade deployment of his surveillance software. But if he refused, they held the fabricated video of him abusing Lily, ready to destroy his reputation and rip his daughter away from him permanently.

"I won't do it," Julian said quietly, his grip tightening on the skillet handle until his knuckles turned completely white.

Marcus's smile vanished, replaced by a cold, corporate threat. "Then I hope you enjoy the view from the inside of a holding cell, Julian. Because the upload to the board of directors just initiated."
