Chapter 5 - The Darkness Within

The sudden plunge into darkness was absolute. The soft hum of the security server died instantly, replaced by a suffocating, heavy silence. In the pitch black of the kitchen, Julian froze, his arms tightening automatically around Lily as the little girl let out a terrified gasp and buried her face against his chest.

"Daddy? What happened? Where did the light go?" Lily cried out, her small frame shivering violently.

"It's okay, sweetheart. I've got you," Julian murmured, his voice strained as he strained his eyes to adjust to the inky blackness. His mind raced, calculating the circuit load. A total blackout wasn't part of the smart-home failure protocols he had programmed. The power grid to the entire house had been cut from the outside, or overridden by a master command he hadn't anticipated.

"Vanessa?" Julian called out into the darkness, his voice echoing off the granite countertops. There was no immediate answer, only the sound of soft, measured breathing somewhere to his left.

"Impressed, Julian?" Vanessa’s voice cut through the dark, seeming to come from multiple directions at once thanks to the integrated ceiling speakers she had somehow reactivated. "You always bragged about the house's backup generator kicking in during a blackout. But you forgot to factor in who holds the administrative override for the secondary power grid."

"You tripped the main breaker," Julian said, his anger flaring through the adrenaline. He took a cautious step forward, his foot brushing against the edge of the kitchen island. "You're plunging the house into chaos just to prove a point? What about Lily? She's terrified!"

"Lily is reacting to your panic, Julian," Vanessa's disembodied voice replied smoothly from the speakers. "You're the one making this a crisis. If you had just agreed to my terms five minutes ago, we wouldn't be sitting in the dark."

"I'm not signing over custody of my daughter to someone unstable enough to hold us hostage in the dark," Julian snapped back, feeling along the edge of the counter for his phone. The screen remained dead—the battery hadn't just drained; the system pulse had fried the logic board. She hadn't just locked him out; she had bricked his devices.

"Unstable?" Vanessa laughed softly, a sound that sent a shiver down Julian's spine. A sharp click echoed near the pantry entrance, followed by the faint, eerie glow of an infrared light turning on. Through the night-vision spectrum of the hidden dome camera above, Julian could see Vanessa's silhouette standing near the doorway, her green dress appearing white under the IR wash. "I am the most stable person in this house, Julian. I am the only one seeing the situation clearly."

"If you upload that footage, you destroy your own life too!" Julian argued, his voice desperation-laced. "Your name is attached to this household just as much as mine. The scandal will ruin you!"

"I have nothing left to ruin," Vanessa whispered back, her silhouette shifting closer through the IR monitor's reflection on the microwave glass. "You stripped away my career, my independence, my autonomy. A public scandal is a small price to pay for my freedom."

Before Julian could respond, a sudden, sharp metallic noise came from the front hallway downstairs—the sound of the heavy front door's deadbolt disengaging with a loud, mechanical clack.

Julian froze. Someone was unlocking the door from the outside.
