Chapter 1 - The Echo of the Lens

The digital hum of the security server vibrated through the lath and plaster of the hallway, a low, constant frequency that felt less like machinery and more like a pulse. In the center of the kitchen, the air hung heavy with unresolved tension. Julian stood beneath the white dome of the ceiling-mounted camera, his chest heaving beneath his black button-down shirt. His dark hair was slightly damp at the temples, plastered against his skin from the frantic sprint up the stairs.
Vanessa stood frozen by the marble island. Her blonde hair fell in loose, controlled waves over her vibrant green dress, contrasting sharply with the stark minimalism of the kitchen. Her expression had already shifted from the frantic, whispered intensity of a moment ago into something chillingly composed.
Across the room, Lily buried her face deeper into Julian’s gray pants, her small frame trembling as she clutched him like a lifeline. Her light-colored dress was stained with a smudge of dust from the floorboards.
"What happens when that footage goes online?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping into a harsh, vibrating register as he pointed a trembling finger upward at the black lens of the dome camera. "Do you have any idea what this does to us? To her?"
Vanessa didn't flinch. Instead, the corner of her mouth twitched upward into a slow, cynical smile that failed to reach her eyes, though genuine tears welled up and spilled over her lower lashes.
"Too bad for you," Vanessa said softly, her voice dripping with a terrifying certainty. "That isn't the only camera in this house."
Julian stared at her, his jaw tightening until the muscles ached. "What are you talking about?"
"I mean," Vanessa replied, taking a deliberate step closer while keeping her voice agonizingly level, "you think you built this fortress to keep the world out, Julian. But you forgot who installed the wiring."
Lily whimpered, her tiny fingers tightening around Julian’s thigh. "Daddy, make her stop talking. She looks at me when the lights are off."
Julian looked down at his daughter, then back at his wife. A cold sweat broke out across his neck as he realized the horrifying depth of what Vanessa was implying. He reached into his pocket for his phone, his fingers fumbling with the lock screen as he tried to open the local server app. The screen remained stubbornly black, spinning a loading wheel that wouldn't resolve.
"You locked me out of the main drive," Julian whispered, horror dawning in his eyes.
May you like
"Not just the drive," Vanessa whispered back, her smile widening just a fraction as she tapped her temple. "I have a live feed syncing to an off-site cloud right now. And it started streaming the moment you walked through that front door."
