Chapter 3 - The Locked Perimeter

The heavy thud of the smart lock engaging downstairs reverberated through the floorboards like a warning shot. Julian stood frozen with Lily in his arms, the realization settling over him with suffocating weight. The house wasn't just a home anymore; it had been converted into a high-security vault, and Vanessa held the master privileges.
"Open the doors, Vanessa," Julian said, his voice tight with controlled fury. He shifted Lily to one arm and took a deliberate step toward the kitchen exit. "This has gone far enough. You're holding us hostage in our own home over a bruised ego?"
"Host hostage is such an ugly word," Vanessa replied smoothly, strolling past the island to pour herself a glass of water from the tap. Her movements were infuriatingly calm, a stark contrast to Julian's surging adrenaline. She took a slow sip, letting the silence stretch before speaking again. "Think of it as a mandatory family meeting. For too long, Julian, we’ve been living in the shadows of your pristine public image. You play the brilliant tech innovator by day and the devoted family man by night, while behind closed doors, you treat this house like a laboratory and us like your test subjects."
"That is a complete distortion of reality," Julian retorted, his voice rising despite his best efforts to keep calm for Lily's sake. "I built this company to give you and Lily financial security. Every camera, every sensor—it was all designed to protect this family from outside threats."
"Protect us?" Vanessa slammed the glass down on the counter, the sharp crack making Lily flinch and bury her face into Julian's shoulder. "You weren't protecting us from the outside. You were protecting your brand from us. Every time Lily cried too loudly during your investor calls, you looked at her like she was a glitch in your software. And me? I couldn't breathe without a notification pinging on your smartwatch."
Julian stared at her, seeing a depth of resentment he had been too blind, or too arrogant, to notice. "If you were that unhappy, why didn't you just leave? We could have talked about a separation, a divorce, anything."
"And walk away empty-handed?" Vanessa smiled coldly, stepping closer to the threshold of the kitchen. "Allowing you to paint me as the unstable, unfit mother in a custody battle backed by your wealthy tech friends? I don't think so. I needed leverage. And tonight, I finally got it."
"The footage," Julian said, the pieces clicking together in his mind. "You staged that whole scene with Lily. You knew I'd check the feed, you knew I'd come running up here, and you made sure the angle captured you abusing her just enough to look convincing to an outside observer, while hiding the fact that she provoked it or that you orchestrated the frame."
"Oh, it's not a frame, Julian," Vanessa whispered, her voice dropping to a chilling register. "She really did eat off the floor. And the cloud server really is receiving the data stream. The only question left is what happens when I hit send to your board of directors tomorrow morning."
Julian took a deep breath, forcing his panic down into a cold, calculating corner of his mind. He was a systems engineer; every system had a vulnerability, a physical bypass when the digital controls failed. He looked past Vanessa toward the service pantry at the back of the kitchen.
"You think you've won," Julian said quietly, turning his body slightly to shield Lily's view. "You think you hold all the cards. But you forgot one fundamental rule about the hardware in this house."
Vanessa raised an eyebrow, a flicker of genuine curiosity breaking through her stoic mask. "Oh? And what's that?"

"I wrote the firmware," Julian said, lunging sideways toward the pantry door before she could react.
