Chapter 4 - The Hardware Bypass

Julian’s shoulder hit the wooden frame of the pantry door with a dull crash, throwing his weight against the latch. The smart lock on the pantry—a secondary zone independent of the main hallway—groaned under the sudden mechanical pressure. Behind him, Vanessa didn't even flinch; she simply watched him with that same unsettling, cynical amusement.

"You really think a mechanical bypass will save you?" Vanessa called out calmly, taking another slow sip of her water. "The pantry windows are laminated ballistic glass, Julian. And the ventilation shaft is too narrow for even Lily to crawl through. You're trapped in a cage of your own meticulous design."

Julian ignored her, his fingers flying over the emergency manual-release panel hidden behind the pantry's spice rack. This was an analog kill-switch he had installed during the initial construction—a hardwired relay designed to cut power to the smart locks in the event of an electrical fire. But as his fingers pried open the metal casing, a wave of cold dread washed over him. The internal wiring had been neatly, surgically severed. Clean cuts with wire strippers.

"Looking for this?"

Julian spun around. Vanessa stood in the doorway of the pantry, holding a small bundle of copper wires between her index finger and thumb. Her green dress caught the harsh fluorescent light of the pantry, making her look less like a wife and more like an executioner.

"You disabled the physical override," Julian whispered, the reality of his entrapment settling heavily onto his shoulders.

"I told you, Julian. I know this house just as well as you do," Vanessa said, dropping the severed wires onto the floor with a metallic clink. She stepped closer, her eyes locking onto his with a fierce intensity. "You spend all your time building walls to keep the world out, but you never bothered to check who was holding the blueprints."

Lily whimpered, her tiny arms tightening around Julian's neck. "Daddy, I'm cold. Let's go to my room."

Julian looked down at his daughter, his heart aching. He couldn't afford to panic in front of her. He had to play a psychological game now, matching Vanessa's cold calculation with strategic patience.

"Alright, Vanessa," Julian said, slowly straightening up while keeping Lily securely in his arms. He stepped out of the pantry, placing himself between Vanessa and the doorway. "You've made your point. You've proven you can outsmart my security network. What do you want? Money? A settlement? Name your terms, and we can draw up the papers tonight."

Vanessa tilted her head, studying him as if he were an interesting specimen under a microscope. "Money? Julian, you think everything can be solved with a wire transfer or a corporate buyout. That's your fatal flaw. You think people are just variables in an equation you can optimize."

"Then what is it?" Julian demanded, his voice hardening. "If not money, what are you after?"

"Control," Vanessa replied softly, stepping past him into the kitchen. She turned back to face him, her expression turning deadly serious. "I want full, undisputed custody of Lily. I want the house transferred entirely into my name. And I want your resignation from the board of directors effective immediately. You will walk away with nothing, just like you left me with nothing of my own identity over the past five years."

Julian stared at her in disbelief. "You're asking me to commit professional and personal suicide. If I step down from the board, the company will implode. Our investors will pull funding, and the lawsuits will bankrupt us both."

"Then I suppose you better start drafting the resignation letter," Vanessa said, checking her watch with chilling indifference. "Because the automatic cloud sync is scheduled to upload the video file to your CEO's private email at exactly midnight. That gives you precisely forty-five minutes to decide whether you want to save your reputation or your family."

Before Julian could formulate a response, the lights in the kitchen flickered violently, plunging the room into absolute darkness.
