Chapter 11 - The Phantom Feed

The neon pink glow of the diner sign flickered against the windshield as Julian stared down at the glowing screen of his phone. The text message sat there like a digital ticking time bomb. Check camera four, Julian. You left before the real show started.

With a trembling hand, Julian unlocked his offline tablet, bypassed the primary gateway, and manually accessed the direct IP stream for camera four. Camera four wasn't located in the kitchen, or the hallway, or the master bedroom. It was the lens mounted discreetly in the corner of Lily’s upstairs playroom—a room Julian had meticulously engineered to be an impenetrable sanctuary, completely isolated from the rest of the smart-home network. Or so he had believed.

The live feed popped up on the tablet screen with a crisp, high-definition resolution.

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. The playroom was empty of people, but the room had been completely rearranged. The toy chests were overturned, the bookshelves stripped bare, and in the center of the plush carpet sat a laptop—open, running, and connected directly to an active data feed.

On the screen of that laptop, a live video conference was broadcasting to an empty boardroom at Julian’s corporate headquarters. And sitting in the chairman’s executive leather chair, staring directly into the webcam with a calm, chilling smile, was someone Julian never expected to see occupying that seat at two in the morning.

It wasn't Marcus. It was Vanessa's lawyer, a man named Henderson whom Julian hadn't seen in three years—not since the pre-nuptial agreement was quietly signed in a downtown office.

Julian leaned closer to the tablet, his eyes wide with disbelief. Henderson looked up from the conference monitor, as if he could see Julian through the lens of camera four, and raised a single hand in a slow, mocking wave.

"Looking for us, Julian?" Henderson's voice echoed faintly through the tablet's tiny speakers, audio piped directly from the playroom microphone.

Julian slammed his hand onto the steering wheel, the horn blaring a short, sharp note that startled Lily awake in the backseat. She let out a small, frightened cry, rubbing her eyes with the back of her sleeve.

"Daddy? Where are we? Are we home?" Lily asked, her voice small and trembling.

"No, sweetheart, we're not home. We're safe, I promise," Julian murmured, turning back around while keeping his eyes fixed on the tablet screen. He tapped the speaker icon, opening a two-way audio channel back to the house.

"Henderson! What are you doing in my company's boardroom at this hour?" Julian demanded into the tablet's microphone, his voice cutting through the quiet interior of the car. "How did you even get past corporate security?"

Henderson chuckled on the other end, a dry, academic sound that made Julian's skin crawl. "Corporate security answers to the majority shareholder, Julian. And as of midnight tonight, following your abrupt departure from the premises and your failure to respond to an emergency board summons, Vanessa’s proxy vote has officially elevated her to controlling shareholder status."

Julian felt the ground drop out from under him. "That's impossible. A proxy transfer requires a physical signature and a notarized board quorum!"

"Which was executed three years ago," Henderson replied smoothly, leaning back in the executive chair on the tablet screen. "When you signed the corporate restructuring papers under the guise of an 'estate tax optimization strategy.' You remember that paperwork, don't you, Julian? The one Vanessa drafted while you were busy coding your precious security algorithms in the basement. You signed over fifty-one percent of your voting shares to your wife as a contingency against corporate liability."

Julian stared at the screen, the memories rushing back with horrifying clarity. Three years ago, fresh off their first major venture capital injection, Vanessa had insisted on structuring the company assets to protect them from potential lawsuits. He had trusted her blindly, signing the papers without reading the fine print in the indemnity clause.

"She used me," Julian whispered, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. "The whole marriage... the house, the security cameras, the framing tonight... it was all a premeditated corporate hostile takeover orchestrated from day one."

"Not a hostile takeover, Julian. A legal redistribution of assets," Henderson corrected smoothly. "And now, pursuant to Section 9 of the corporate charter, the board has voted unanimously to place you on indefinite administrative leave due to 'documented domestic instability,' supported by the video footage currently playing on every monitor in the corporate office."

In the backseat, Lily began to cry softly again, sensing the absolute despair radiating from her father. "Daddy, please... let's just go away. I don't like this place."

Julian looked back at his daughter, his heart breaking into a million jagged pieces. He had wanted to build a fortress to protect his family from the world, but he had accidentally built a prison—and handed the keys to the warden.

Suddenly, the tablet screen flickered, and camera four's feed cut to black. A new message flashed across the display in bold red letters: Access Revoked. Master Admin Override Initiated.
