Chapter 7 - The Shadow of Arthur Vance

The flickering desk lamp cast long, distorted shadows across the pages of the financial statements. Eleanor’s breath hitched in her throat as she traced the signature at the bottom of the legal freeze order. It was her late father’s unmistakable, sprawling handwriting. Arthur Vance had known about Julian’s secret family all along. He hadn't just bought an ambitious young engineer; he had purchased a man trapped in a golden cage, tethered by chains of blackmail and calculated cruelty.

"My father..." Eleanor whispered, the paper fluttering from her numb fingers to land softly on the Persian carpet. "He knew about Sarah and Clara before he approved our engagement?"

"He orchestrated every piece of it," Julian replied bitterly, staring into the dark, empty fireplace. "He didn't want a son-in-law with a clean past. He wanted someone compromised. Someone who would never dare cross him, because a single word to the press would destroy my entire existence. When Sarah passed away last year from pneumonia, I tried to bring Clara into my life legally. Your father threatened to strip me of every patent, every share, and throw me into bankruptcy. He forced me to abandon them in a rented room on the other side of the city."

Beatrice scoffed, crossing her arms tightly over her chest, refusing to let sympathy pierce her armor. "Arthur was a pragmatic man. He protected our family’s legacy from parasites like you and your street-rat spawn. You made your bed, Julian. Now lie in it."

"And what about the baby?" Eleanor demanded, her voice cracking with a sudden, sharp grief that cut deeper than anger. "Whose child is little Lily? Is she... is she yours as well?"

Julian flinched as if he had been struck physically. He looked away, his jaw working tightly as he swallowed the bitter pill of his own catastrophic mistakes. "Sarah had a sister. When Sarah died, I took Clara and the baby in. Lily is my niece by adoption, but she’s all Clara has left in this world. I was supposed to meet them tonight before the ceremony. I was supposed to hand them passports and tickets to start over across the ocean. But your security team delayed me... and Clara panicked."

"And so she ran straight into our wedding, blowing up our entire social standing in front of five hundred elite guests," Beatrice hissed, her face contorted with rage. "The tabloids are already running live updates. Our stock prices are plunging by the minute. By morning, the Vance name will be dragged through the absolute mud."

Eleanor ignored her mother. She walked slowly toward the French doors, staring out into the torrential rain hammering the dark glass. The image of ten-year-old Clara standing in the aisle, clutching that baby with such desperate, unwavering loyalty, suddenly overshadowed every drop of her own humiliation.

"Where are they now, Julian?" Eleanor asked quietly, her back turned to him.

Julian blinked in surprise, hesitating for a fraction of a second. "I... I don't know. The fire escape leads down to the alley behind the old theater district. They have no money, no shelter, and the temperature is dropping below freezing."

Eleanor turned around sharply, her eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce determination that silenced her mother instantly. "Then we are going to find them before it's too late."
