Chapter 2 - Beneath the Fallen Roses

Dust and crushed petals exploded into the air as the heavy floral arch buried Julian and Eleanor. Shrieks echoed through the grand ballroom as guests surged backward, knocking over gilded chairs and crystal flutes. Beatrice rushed toward the wreckage, her manicured hands clawing frantically at the tangled branches of white roses and heavy wooden framing to free her daughter.
"Eleanor! Are you alright?" Beatrice screamed, her voice shrill with panic as she shoved a thick oak branch aside.
Eleanor pushed herself up, her expensive white wedding gown smeared with green stem juice and dark earth. Her hair, painstakingly styled into an intricate updo, came tumbling down around her shoulders in messy waves. She looked less like a blushing bride and more like a ghost caught in a ruin. She ignored her mother’s frantic ministrations, turning her wide, terrified eyes entirely toward Julian.
Julian was already on his feet, though he stumbled like a man walking through a heavy gale. He ignored the thorns stuck in his tuxedo jacket. His gaze was locked onto Clara, who stood frozen fifteen feet away, still cradling little Lily. The baby had finally stopped crying, her big round eyes blinking sleepily at the chaos surrounding them.
"Clara, listen to me," Julian began, taking a cautious step forward, his hands held up defensively. "You need to come with me. Right now. We can talk about this outside."
"No!" Clara shrieked, backing away toward the heavy oak doors of the ballroom. "You left us! You promised you were coming back with milk and diapers, but you married her instead!"
Eleanor gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. She stared at Julian, the color draining from her face until she looked entirely translucent. "Julian... what is she talking about? Who are these children?"
"They are nobody," Julian lied, his voice pitching higher than intended, betraying the frantic panic clawing at his chest. "Eleanor, I swear to you, it’s a hallucination. Some kind of cruel setup. You know my family—you know my past."
"Stop lying!" Clara sobbed, lifting Lily’s tiny left hand into the air for the entire room to see. "Look at her thumb! She has the exact same double-jointed pinky and the birthmark on the back of her neck! Just like yours, Julian! Just like yours!"
Beatrice spun around, her face twisted in absolute disgust as she looked from Clara to Julian. "Julian, you vile, deceitful monster! What have you brought into our lives?"
May you like
Julian swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically toward the exit as every guest in the room pulled out their phones to record the unfolding nightmare.
