Chapter 3 - The Flight Through the Lobby

The heavy oak doors of the ballroom burst open, but instead of security, the chilly night air rushed in, carrying the distant wail of rising wind. Clara didn't wait for Julian to reach her. With a sudden burst of adrenaline, she spun on her heel and bolted toward the grand staircase, her blue dress fluttering like a bruised wing.

"Clara! Stop!" Julian shouted, abandoning the altar entirely as he sprinted after her, kicking off his patent leather shoes to gain traction on the slick marble floor.

"Get away from us!" Clara cried over her shoulder, her small sneakers slapping hard against the stone steps as she bounded upward toward the mezzanine level.

Eleanor stood frozen near the ruins of the altar, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. Beatrice was already on her phone, her voice a sharp, venomous hiss as she spoke to her lawyers, demanding every security guard in the hotel track down the trespassing children immediately. The guests whispered furiously among themselves, phones raised, capturing every agonizing second of the social elite’s most catastrophic public humiliation.

Upstairs, the quiet hallway of the luxury hotel stretched out in an endless line of golden sconces and heavy mahogany doors. Clara’s chest heaved as she clutched Lily tighter, her arms burning with exhaustion. She ducked down a narrow service corridor, aiming for the laundry elevator she remembered from the days when Julian used to sneak her and their mother into the building just to show them where he worked before the wealth rolled in.

A heavy hand suddenly clamped down onto Clara’s shoulder, spinning her around with terrifying force.

Julian stood there, chest heaving, his tuxedo jacket torn at the shoulder, his tie hanging loosely around his sweaty neck. His eyes were wild, stripped of all the sophisticated charm he usually wore like armor.

"Give me the baby, Clara," Julian whispered, his voice dangerously low, a mixture of pleading and sheer terror. "You can't take care of her out here in the cold. You don't know what you've unleashed."

"You're not our daddy anymore!" Clara sobbed, tears splashing onto Julian’s trembling hand as she tried to wrench herself free. "You traded us for her money!"

"It's not like that," Julian gasped, stepping closer, his fingers grazing the edge of Lily’s yellow dress. "I did it for us. All of us."

Before Clara could scream, a blinding beam of flashlight cut through the dim service hallway, accompanied by the heavy, echoing footsteps of hotel security guards rounding the corner.
