Chapter 1 - The Shattered Vows

The crystal chandeliers of the Starlight Ballroom cast a brilliant, merciless glow over rows of silk-dressed guests. Ten-year-old Clara stood trembling in the center aisle, her light-blue cotton dress stained with dust and tears. In her arms, heavy and restless, eighteen-month-old Lily fussed in a bright yellow dress. Clara’s breathing came in ragged gasps as she stared up at the altar.
"Daddy!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking with a raw, desperate agony that cut through the murmur of the crowd.
Julian stiffened beneath his pristine black tuxedo and silk bow tie. Beside him, Eleanor froze, the white lace train of her designer wedding gown pooling like snow around her satin heels.
"Stop the wedding!" Clara cried out, her small frame shaking violently under the weight of the baby.
Murmurs erupted like a sudden flock of frightened birds. Eleanor’s mother, a formidable woman named Beatrice dressed in heavy black and silver satin, stepped forward from the front row. Her face hardened into a mask of pure fury.
"What is the meaning of this sick disruption?" Beatrice hissed, her eyes narrowing at Clara. "Who let these vagrants into the hall?"
"Please, please!" Clara sobbed, her face drenched in hot, relentless tears as she pointed a shaking finger directly at the groom. "Look at her! Look at the baby!"
Julian turned slowly, his face draining of all color. A cold sweat beaded on his forehead. He took a half-step back, his jaw clenching so hard muscles ticked in his cheeks.
"What did you just call me?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping into a harsh, trembling whisper that barely carried over the silence.
Clara clutched Lily tighter against her chest, her dark eyes flashing with a terrifying, adult-like grief. She pointed a trembling finger right at Julian’s face, tears streaming freely down her cheeks as she gasped out words that defied all reason.
"Little finger! Even finger base a picture of yours, start neck!" Clara wailed, sobbing uncontrollably.

Julian staggered backward, colliding hard against the floral wedding arch. The massive arrangement of white roses shuddered, tilted dangerously, and crashed down directly on top of the bride and groom.
