Chapter 11 - The Legal Ambush

"Mother, stop it," Eleanor commanded, stepping directly between Beatrice and Julian, her posture rigid and uncompromising. "This isn't the time or the place for your corporate bloodlust. Two children almost died tonight because of the toxic web my father built."

Beatrice scoffed, her eyes flashing with disbelief as she looked at her daughter. "Eleanor, have you lost your mind entirely? This vagrant has humiliated you in front of the entire upper crust of the city! Our stock has dropped twelve percent since midnight, and the board is calling for an emergency vote to strip us of our holdings. And you’re defending him?"

"I am not defending Julian," Eleanor replied sharply, her voice echoing down the quiet hospital corridor. "I am cleaning up the mess that my family created. Arthur Vance trapped him in a cage of extortion, and we perpetuated it. But it stops tonight."

One of the lawyers stepped forward, a tall, gray-haired man named Henderson who had served the Vance family for three decades. He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and looked coldly at Julian.

"Mr. Vance," Henderson began, his tone formal and devoid of emotion. "Whether you were blackmailed or not is legally irrelevant at this stage. You signed a prenuptial agreement containing a strict morality and fidelity clause. By concealing a dependent child and entering into this marriage under false pretenses, you have legally forfeited any claim to the Vance estate, your shares in the corporation, and your partnership status."

Julian stared at the lawyer, a strange, hollow sensation washing over him. The wealth, the power, the prestigious address, the designer suits—it was all evaporating into thin air, stripped away in a matter of seconds. For a terrifying moment, the ghost of his past poverty clawed at his throat. But as he glanced through the small glass window of the adjacent cubicle, seeing ten-year-old Clara sleeping peacefully beneath warm white blankets, the panic vanished, replaced by an unexpected, profound sense of relief.

"Take it all," Julian said softly, his voice steady and clear, shocking both Beatrice and the lawyers into silence. "Take the shares, take the estate, take the title. I don't care."

Beatrice narrowed her eyes, stepping closer as if trying to read a hidden trap in his composure. "You think you can just walk away empty-handed? We will sue you for fraud. You will spend the next ten years in court paying back every cent my family invested in your fraudulent career."

"Mother, enough!" Eleanor snapped, her voice finally breaking through Beatrice’s tirade with terrifying authority. She turned to Henderson, her eyes blazing. "You will draft a complete settlement by morning. Julian will sign away every corporate asset voluntarily, without a fight. In exchange, the Vance family will drop all legal claims, and a trust fund will be established immediately for Clara and Lily’s education and medical care."

Henderson blinked, glancing uncertainly between Beatrice and Eleanor. Beatrice opened her mouth to protest, but one look at Eleanor’s fierce, unyielding expression stopped the words in her throat.

"Fine," Beatrice hissed, turning on her heel. "Let the beggar keep his strays. But by sunrise, Julian Vance, you are dead to this family."
