Chapter 10 - The Pediatric Ward

The sterile white lights of the hospital’s emergency wing buzzed with quiet urgency. Little Lily had been whisked away into a private examination room by a team of pediatric nurses, while Clara was settled onto a gurney in the adjacent cubicle, receiving intravenous fluids and warm blankets to combat the onset of mild hypothermia.
Julian paced the narrow hallway outside, his fingers dug deep into his hair, his mind racing through the wreckage of his life. Eleanor stepped out of Clara’s cubicle, gently pulling the privacy curtain shut behind her. She walked over to Julian, her expression unreadable in the harsh fluorescent lighting.
"She’s resting," Eleanor said quietly, leaning her back against the pale green wall. "The doctor says she was operating on pure adrenaline and survival instinct for the past twenty-four hours. A few more hours out in that cold, and we would be talking about a tragedy."
Julian swallowed hard, his throat tight. "And Lily?"
"Chest infection. They’re giving her nebulizer treatments now, but she’ll pull through. She’s tougher than she looks." Eleanor paused, studying Julian with an intensity that made him squirm. "You built an entire fortress of lies, Julian. You thought you were protecting them by hiding them away, but all you did was hand my father the ammunition to destroy everyone involved."
"I didn't have a choice," Julian groaned, his voice breaking. "Arthur Vance was a monster disguised as a philanthropist. If I defied him, he would have ruined my family before it even began."
"My father is dead, Julian," Eleanor reminded him, her voice cold yet laced with a strange sort of liberation. "He died six months ago, taking his corporate secrets and his blackmail lists to the grave. You were free. For six whole months, you were completely free to bring Clara and Lily home, to make things right. But you were too afraid of losing your social status, your wealth, and your place at the top."
Julian couldn't look her in the eye. Every word she spoke was an unvarnished, brutal truth. He had been a coward, paralyzed by the fear of falling back into the poverty he had clawed his way out of.
Before Julian could answer, the elevator doors at the end of the hallway chimed loudly. Footsteps echoed against the polished linoleum floor. Eleanor turned her head, and her posture instantly stiffened.
Beatrice strode down the hall, flanked by two towering men in dark gray business suits—the Vance family’s senior legal counsels. Her face was a mask of calculated fury, her eyes locked entirely on Julian.

"Well, well," Beatrice sneered, stopping just inches away from Julian, her voice dripping with venom. "Playing the devoted father in a charity ward while the media outside is tearing our corporate empire apart. Did you really think you could walk away from my daughter and this family without paying the ultimate price?"
