Chapter 5 - The Kitchen Counter

The interior of the house was dead silent, save for the hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen. Claire stepped carefully across the hardwood floor, her breathing shallow. The porch light from across the street cast long, eerie shadows through the front window.

She walked down the short hallway toward the kitchen. The overhead light flickered once before holding steady, illuminating the clean marble counters.

Right in the center of the island sat a small, old-fashioned audio cassette recorder. A blinking red light indicated it was currently recording.

Claire approached it cautiously, her fingers trembling as she hovered over the stop button. Next to the recorder sat an old photograph of herself and Marcus taken five years ago, before the control, before the isolation, before the fear took root in their home.

She pressed the play button.

Marcus’s voice filled the quiet kitchen, calm, measured, and chillingly familiar.

“If you’re listening to this, Claire, it means you finally decided to push back. You always thought you were the strong one, hiding behind your quiet smiles. But you don't know half of what I’ve set in motion. The house isn't in your name. The savings account was drained yesterday. And the man you think is your friend, Mr. Palmer? Ask him about what happened to the previous owners of this neighborhood twenty years ago.”

The tape clicked off, leaving behind a heavy, suffocating silence.

Claire stood frozen, staring at the small plastic machine. Mr. Palmer? The quiet, kind old man who had lived next door for decades?

Before she could process the accusation, the front doorbell rang, chiming loudly through the empty house.

Claire walked back down the hallway, her heart hammering against her ribs, and pulled the door open. Officer Davis stood on the porch, looking grim, holding a thick manila folder in his hands.

“Mrs. Vance,” Davis said, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation. “We caught him, but you need to see what was in the duffel bag before you trust anyone in this neighborhood.”
