Chapter 15 - The Final Round

The cabin door creaked open as Claire stepped up onto the wooden porch. The interior was warm, illuminated by the orange glow of a stone fireplace.
Marcus stood by the kitchen counter, pouring a glass of water with one hand while holding a heavy hunting rifle in the other. He turned as the floorboards groaned under Claire’s boots.
“I knew you’d follow me here, Claire,” Marcus said, a tired, broken smile crossing his face. The athletic facade was gone; he looked ragged, cornered, and defeated.
“It’s over, Marcus,” Claire said, stepping into the warm room and dropping the black boxing glove onto the wooden table between them.
Marcus looked down at the glove, then back up into Claire’s eyes. He slowly lowered the rifle, letting it slide from his hands to crash heavily against the wooden floorboards.
“You really changed, didn't you?” Marcus whispered, his voice cracking.
“I didn't change,” Claire replied, stepping right up to him without a shred of fear in her posture. “I just finally found my strength.”
Outside, the flashing red and blue lights of half a dozen state police cruisers lit up the pine trees through the cabin windows, casting long, peaceful shadows across the room. The door swung open, and Officer Davis stepped inside, snapping the steel cuffs around Marcus’s wrists without a single word of resistance.
As Marcus was led out into the cool night air, Claire walked back out onto the porch.

Sophie was waiting for her by the cars, holding Mr. Palmer’s hand, looking up at the clear, star-filled northern sky. The suburban street on Maple Street felt a million miles away, but the nightmare was finally over.
Claire took a deep, steady breath of the crisp mountain air, smiled down at her daughter, and knew for the first time in ten years that they were truly, finally safe.
