Chapter 1 - The First Strike

The autumn wind whipped down Maple Street, carrying the scent of dry leaves and approaching frost. The golden hour had faded into a bruising twilight.

Marcus stood with his fists clenched, the white boxing hand wraps stained with old sweat against his grey t-shirt. His athletic frame blocked the sidewalk, casting a long, jagged shadow over Claire and seven-year-old Sophie.

Sophie pressed her face tightly into her mother’s blue cardigan, her small fingers clutching the dark jeans at Claire’s waist.

“Put the gloves on, Claire,” Marcus growled, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. “The next one will leave you unable to stand.”

Claire didn’t flinch. Her brown hair caught the orange glare of a neighbor’s porch light as she held her ground, her gaze fixed entirely on his eyes.

“So stand next to Mr. Bright,” Claire said softly, her voice steady despite the tremor in her chest.

Marcus let out a short, dismissive laugh, a smirk twisting his bearded face.

Claire moved with explosive speed. She grabbed the black boxing glove lying on the pavement and struck his chest with a dull, heavy thud.

“Sophie, go stand next to Mr. Palmer right now!” Claire shouted, her eyes darting toward the safety of the neighbor's yard.

Marcus staggered back half a step, the smirk vanishing instantly. His expression morphed into pure, unadulterated fury as he raised his wrapped hands, his voice echoing sharply down the quiet suburban cul-de-sac.

“You still think this is going your way?” Marcus roared, stepping forward. “Teach her a lesson! What do you think you can do?”

Claire didn't blink. She stared intensely into his face, the emotional tension between them thick enough to choke on.

“You’re about to find out,” Claire whispered.

Marcus lunged forward, but a police cruiser turned the corner, its blue lights flashing silently against the houses.
