Chapter 3 - The Trunk

Officer Davis stepped out onto the pavement, his boots clicking rhythmically against the concrete. The red and blue lights from the squad car painted the surrounding maple trees in a surreal, flashing hue.
“Step away from the vehicle, Marcus,” Davis instructed, resting a hand casually near his utility belt.
Marcus didn't move immediately. His eyes locked onto Claire with a chilling, predatory intensity.
“You’re making a massive mistake, Claire,” Marcus said, his voice a low hiss. “Once you open that box, you can’t put the pieces back together.”
“I’m done putting pieces together, Marcus,” Claire replied, her breathing shallow but controlled.
Officer Davis walked past them, stepping up to the dark sedan parked in the driveway. He pulled out a set of keys that Marcus had dropped near the front tire. With a sharp click, the trunk popped open, releasing a stale gust of air.
Inside sat a heavy duffel bag and a collection of unfamiliar legal documents, binders, and a stack of passports bearing different names.
Davis shined his flashlight into the deep recesses of the trunk. He reached out, unzipping the duffel bag slightly. Inside rested a stack of cash wrapped in bank bands, alongside a heavy metal lockbox.
“Marcus,” Davis called out, his voice turning entirely professional. “Step over here, please. Hands where I can see them.”
Marcus slowly turned around, his athletic frame tense like a coiled spring. He didn't look defeated; he looked calculating.
“It’s just travel money, Officer. We take trips. Everyone knows that,” Marcus lied smoothly, though a bead of sweat rolled down his temple.
“Travel money with three different passports for a seven-year-old child?” Davis asked, pulling a blue passport booklet from the bag.
Sophie buried her face deeper into Claire’s side, whispering, “Mommy, I want to go home.”
“We are going home, sweetheart,” Claire whispered back, tears finally stinging her eyes.

Davis reached for his radio to call for backup, but before he could raise it to his mouth, Marcus moved with terrifying speed, shoving the officer hard against the side of the squad car and sprinting down the dark alleyway between the houses.
