Chapter 10 - The Warehouse Trap

Marcus stepped out from behind a stack of wooden crates. He wasn't wearing his grey t-shirt anymore; he had changed into a dark tactical jacket, his hands still wrapped in the white boxing tape.

“I knew you’d figure it out, Claire,” Marcus said, a cold, satisfied grin spreading across his face. “You always were too smart for your own good.”

“Where is Sophie?” Claire demanded, stepping past Officer Davis and marching directly toward Marcus, fear entirely replaced by fury.

Marcus chuckled softly. “She’s safe, Claire. Upstairs in the office. But you’re not getting to her until we finish what we started on Maple Street.”

Officer Davis raised his weapon, locking it directly onto Marcus’s chest. “Drop to your knees, Marcus. It’s over.”

Marcus didn't even look at the gun. He kept his eyes locked on Claire.

“Is it?” Marcus asked quietly. He whistled twice.

From the shadows above the catwalks, two masked figures emerged, holding heavy iron chains. Before Davis could react, a heavy wooden crate swung down from a overhead pulley system, smashing directly into the side of the cruiser and blocking the exit.

At the same time, one of the masked figures dropped a heavy metal rolling door at the front of the warehouse, plunging the interior into deep shadow.

“You think a badge and a gun makes you safe here?” Marcus taunted, taking a slow step toward Claire.

Claire didn't back down. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a heavy steel padlock she had grabbed from the shelf near the door.

“You think you can break me, Marcus?” Claire said, her voice steady and echoing off the metal walls. “You built this whole trap because you were terrified of what I’d do when I finally stopped running.”

Marcus’s smile vanished. He lunged forward, closing the distance between them in a heartbeat.
