Chapter 5 - The Scratching in the Ceiling

The scraping sound above grew louder, resembling long fingernails dragging slowly across dry plaster.
Arthur stood frozen with the heavy brass attic key clutched tightly in his fist, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.
He glanced down at Lily, who had curled herself into a tight ball against the sofa legs, her eyes fixed entirely on the ceiling hatch located just outside the master bedroom door.
"Stay here, Lily. Do not move under any circumstances," Arthur whispered fiercely, his voice laced with protective desperation.
He stepped across the hardwood floor, his footsteps making almost no sound as he approached the dark hallway.
The air grew noticeably colder the closer he got to the stairwell, carrying a faint, musty scent of old dust and rusted iron.
He reached the base of the pull-down ladder that led to the attic, its wooden panels shrouded in absolute darkness.
"Clara?" Arthur called out, his voice echoing hollowly up into the vertical void.
There was no verbal response, only the abrupt cessation of the scratching sound, replaced by the heavy, deliberate breathing of someone standing directly on the other side of the thin plywood hatch.
Arthur raised his hand, sliding the brass key into the small, rusted keyhole integrated into the latch mechanism.
It turned with a stiff, resounding click that sounded like a gunshot in the silent house.
He pulled the safety cord, and the heavy wooden ladder folded downward with a sharp groan, stopping just inches above his head.
A thick gust of freezing air rushed down from the dark opening, carrying with it a pungent, metallic smell that made Arthur gag.
He reached up, flicking the old pull-chain hanging from the rafters to activate the single bare incandescent bulb dangling in the center of the attic.
The dim, yellow light flickered to life, casting long, writhing shadows across the dusty rafters.
Arthur placed his foot on the first wooden rung and began to climb upward, his muscles coiled tight with anticipation.
As his head crested the attic floor level, the yellow light illuminated a space that was entirely empty of storage boxes or old furniture.
Instead, the entire floor was covered in complex, sprawling charcoal drawings sketched directly onto the raw wooden planks.
Arthur stepped fully into the space, his eyes scanning the horrifying murals that covered every square inch of the walls and floor.
Every single drawing depicted his own face, crossed out with heavy, jagged black slashes, surrounding a central image of a young woman he had never seen before in his life.
Before he could process the sheer scale of the madness surrounding him, a heavy wooden beam swung silently through the air from behind him.
The blunt impact struck the side of his head with sickening force, sending a blinding flash of white light across his vision.
As Arthur collapsed sideways onto the dusty floorboards, his hand slipped open, letting the brass key clatter against the wood.

Through a haze of descending unconsciousness, he saw Clara’s boots step into his fading field of vision, accompanied by the soft, chilling sound of a woman humming a lullaby.
