Chapter 14 - The Lake House Vault

The unmarked police cruiser tore down County Road Four, kicking up sheets of cold spray from the rain-soaked tarmac as it veered sharply onto the overgrown gravel drive of the abandoned lake house.

The structure loomed ahead like a skeletal monument to past sins, its charred wooden beams and broken glass windows rotting away amidst the dense, encroaching pine forest.

Three tactical vans slid to a halt behind the cruiser, their doors flying open as heavily armed officers poured out into the darkness, weapons raised and ready.

Arthur scrambled out of the passenger seat, ignoring the stabbing pain in his head and the deep bruises on his wrists as he rushed toward the dilapidated pump house annex at the rear of the property.

Detective Miller grabbed his tactical vest, pulling him back behind a concrete retaining wall.

"Stay behind us, Vance. This is a perimeter breach; we don't know what kind of booby traps she’s rigged inside that utility vault," Miller commanded, signaling for the breach team to move in.

Two officers approached the heavy iron door of the pump house, affixing a linear breaching charge to the rusted hinges.

With a muffled, concussive thump, the door blew inward, showering the damp concrete entrance with sparks and rusted iron flakes.

The tactical team surged into the dark, subterranean chamber, their weapon-mounted flashlights cutting through thick plumes of white smoke and steam.

"Clear!" the lead officer shouted back over the roar of rushing water echoing from deep within the bowels of the underground infrastructure.

Arthur bolted past the perimeter guard and rushed into the pump house, dropping down the rusted iron ladder that led into the primary control vault.

The air down here was heavy, hot, and reeking of ozone and damp earth.

He splashed across the concrete floor of the chamber, his eyes widening at the sight before him.

In the center of the control vault stood a massive, wall-sized digital console glowing with a blinding red error screen.

Strapped securely to the central control panel with heavy-duty industrial cables was Sarah Jenkins, her eyes closed, her breathing shallow and erratic.

She wasn't holding a manual override switch; she was hooked directly into the console via a neural interface port wired into the base of her neck.

The countdown timer on the massive screen blinked furiously: 00:03:15... 00:03:14...

Arthur rushed forward, sliding on the wet floor and slamming his hands onto the central console interface.

"Sarah! Wake up! Disengage the neural link!" Arthur yelled, shaking her shoulder violently.

Sarah’s eyes fluttered open, glowing with a strange, unnatural digital light as a faint, pained smile touched her cracked lips.
