Chapter 11 - The Doppelgänger’s Cell

The woman in the closet blinked rapidly against the sudden influx of bright hallway light, her eyes wide with terror and exhaustion.
Her lips were cracked and bleeding around the edges of the silver duct tape, and her wrists were raw where heavy plastic restraints had dug deep into her skin.
Arthur stumbled backward, his hand flying to his mouth as the foundations of his entire reality shattered into dust.
"Clara..." Arthur whispered, his voice trembling violently as he looked from the bound woman in the closet back toward the hallway.
If this woman was the real Clara Vance, the mother of his child and his legitimate wife of six years, then who was the woman who had sat across from him at the dining table, walked the attic corridors, and orchestrated this entire living nightmare?
Detective Miller stepped into the nursery behind him, his weapon still holstered, his face draining of all color as he took in the horrifying tableau.
"Cut her loose! Get medical in here right now!" Miller roared down the hallway to the waiting paramedics.
Two uniformed officers rushed past Arthur, dropping to their knees to slice away the heavy plastic restraints and gently peel the duct tape from the exhausted woman's face.
She gasped for air, coughing violently as a paramedic held a small oxygen mask over her nose and mouth.
"She... she took my life," the woman rasped, her voice weak and trembling as she clutched desperately at the paramedic’s sleeve.
"She drugged me... locked me in this closet five days ago. She’s been living my life... wearing my clothes..."
Arthur sank slowly to his knees beside her, his mind spinning out of control as the pieces of the terrifying puzzle finally slotted together with sickening clarity.
"Who is she?" Arthur asked gently, his voice barely above a whisper. "Who was in this house with us, Clara?"
The woman looked up at him, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as she gripped his trembling hand with surprising strength.
"Sarah..." she choked out, closing her eyes as fresh tears spilled over.
"Sarah Jenkins. The lead architect from the lake house project... the one you thought died in the fire five years ago."
Arthur froze, the long-buried memories of the lake house fire detonating behind his eyes with blinding intensity.
He hadn't engineered an amnesia treatment to bury a scandal; he had survived a horrific murder attempt orchestrated by a vengeful colleague who had stolen his memories, his home, and his family structure.
Before Arthur could process the full, staggering scope of the betrayal, a low, electronic beep echoed from the hallway floor.
Miller looked down, kicking aside a small, discarded smartphone that had been wedged beneath the nursery door baseboard.
The screen lit up, displaying a live video feed streaming directly from a hidden camera mounted inside the very room they were standing in.
Clara—or rather, Sarah Jenkins—smiled out from the phone screen, her image crystal clear as she spoke through the device's built-in speaker.
"Did you really think it would be that easy to evict me from my own masterpiece, Arthur?" Sarah’s recorded voice purred smoothly from the tiny speaker.
