Chapter 1 - The Broken Alibi

"Daddy, she's lying, please believe me!" seven-year-old Lily sobbed, her small frame trembling violently in her pristine white dress adorned with a faded pink ribbon.
She clutched her battered, gray-eared stuffed rabbit against her chest like a shield, her tear-streaked face twisted in a mixture of profound grief and desperate injustice.
She pointed a trembling, accusing finger across the spotless mahogany dining table toward her mother, Clara, who sat frozen in her cream-colored silk blouse.
Clara did not flinch, though a subtle twitch near her left eye betrayed the immense internal pressure she was under.
She dabbed at her pristine lips with a linen napkin, her long dark hair falling gracefully over her shoulders as she manufactured an expression of profound concern and innocent confusion.
"Arthur, look at her," Clara said, her voice dropping into a smooth, velvety cadence that dripped with theatrical sorrow.
"She is having another one of her vivid episodes. You know how the pediatrician warned us about her overactive imagination and the stress of the new school semester."
Arthur stood rigidly at the head of the dining table, his tall frame tense under his dark blue button-down shirt.
His intense, brooding expression was etched with a dark, demanding hunger for absolute truth.
The vein in his temple throbbed visibly as he surveyed the battlefield of his shattered household.
"What happened? Tell me right now!" Arthur roared, slamming his heavy palm onto the polished wood, making the crystal water glasses vibrate dangerously.
Lily flinched at the sound, her tiny voice cutting through the heavy air with terrifying precision.
"She took me into the laundry room!" Lily cried out, her eyes locking onto her father with a plea that pierced his core.
Arthur’s face instantly drained of all color, shifting from aggressive anger to a profound, hollow shock as his dark eyes widened in sudden realization.
Without another word, he spun sharply on his heel and strode across the plush living room rug.
He stared up at the wall-mounted security camera display screen near the hallway archway.
The high-definition monitor flickered to life, casting an eerie blue glow across the dim room.
The looping footage timestamped twenty minutes prior clearly showed Clara dragging a kicking, screaming Lily inside the cramped, shadowy confines of the laundry room.
Arthur froze, his breath catching in his throat as the visual evidence completely dismantled his wife’s careful alibi.
He reached out a shaking hand, his fingers grazing the cold plastic casing of the monitor as a cold sweat broke out across his neck.
"The camera..." Arthur whispered, his voice barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator.

He slowly turned his head back toward the dining table, his gaze locking onto Clara, who was no longer sitting down.
