Chapter 3 - The Missing Hard Drive

The cool concrete floor pressed against Arthur's knees as he stared into the dark, hollow cavity of the stripped server chassis.

The vital data that had captured Clara’s abuse just moments ago had been meticulously erased and physically removed from the premises.

He looked down at the heavy-duty bolt cutters resting mere inches from his boots, their steel jaws still dusted with fine metal shavings.

This was not a hasty cover-up; it was a deeply calculated operation executed by someone who knew the exact layout of the home security architecture.

Footsteps echoed softly on the wooden staircase above him, accompanied by the slow, deliberate rustle of silk fabric.

Arthur looked up to see Clara standing at the top of the basement steps, her silhouette framed by the harsh hallway light.

She was no longer pretending to be the victim, nor was she offering defensive explanations.

Instead, she simply looked down at him with a predatory patience that made his stomach churn.

"You really thought it would be that easy, didn't you, Arthur?" Clara asked, her voice carrying a rhythmic cadence down the stairwell.

"You spend all your time at the architectural firm designing impenetrable buildings, yet you completely failed to secure the foundation of your own home."

Arthur scrambled to his feet, gripping the wooden handrail as he climbed back up the steps, confronting her face-to-face.

"Where is the drive, Clara? Did you give it to someone, or is it hidden somewhere else in this house?" he demanded, stepping into her personal space.

Clara did not back down an inch. She raised her hand and gently brushed a stray lock of hair from his shoulder, her touch agonizingly tender yet intensely menacing.

"You are asking the wrong questions, my love," Clara murmured softly.

"You should be asking yourself why Lily was crying in the laundry room in the first place. Do you genuinely think she was just throwing a typical childhood temper tantrum?"

Arthur paused, a cold chill washing over him as he remembered the wide, terrified expression on his daughter's face on the security monitor.

He glanced back toward the living room, where Lily was still sitting quietly on the rug, staring intently at a loose floorboard beneath the coffee table.

"What does Lily know?" Arthur whispered, his voice dropping to a gravelly rasp.

Clara smiled faintly, dropping her hand to her side.

"Why don't you go ask her yourself?" she challenged, stepping gracefully around him and heading toward the kitchen.

Arthur turned back toward the living room, his mind racing with a hundred terrifying possibilities.

He walked slowly toward his daughter, who looked up at him with eyes that held a heavy, terrifying secret.

As Arthur knelt down beside her, Lily reached out and placed her small, warm hand over his clenched fist, whispering something that made his blood run cold.
