Chapter 12 - The Front Lawn Package

Arthur scrambled to his feet, leaving the paramedics tending to the real Clara as he bolted out of the nursery and sprinted down the stairs.

He threw open the heavy front door of the Victorian house, bursting out onto the damp porch just as the rain began to clear.

The flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers cast a chaotic, pulsing glow across the manicured front lawn.

Standing alone in the center of the grass was a small, familiar grey-eared stuffed rabbit toy, propped upright against a polished metal briefcase.

Arthur froze on the top step, his breath catching in his throat as he scanned the empty street for any sign of Sarah Jenkins.

"Stay back, Mr. Vance! Do not touch that case!" Detective Miller yelled, rushing out onto the porch behind him with his hand resting on his service weapon.

Arthur ignored the warning, descending the porch steps with slow, deliberate strides as a cold sweat broke out across his neck.

He approached the stuffed rabbit, noticing a thick white envelope tucked securely beneath its arm.

He knelt down in the damp grass, carefully pulling the envelope free from the toy without disturbing its position.

He ripped open the flap, pulling out a single sheet of heavy cardstock paper adorned with a complex, hand-drawn architectural schematic of the city's central water and power grid.

Written across the blueprint in bold, slashing red ink were the words:

“The foundation is compromised, Arthur. You have two hours to choose between your family and your legacy.”

Arthur flipped the paper over, revealing a digital access code and a countdown timer currently ticking down from one hundred and twenty minutes.

Miller reached his side, shining his heavy tactical flashlight across the blueprint and the metal briefcase resting on the grass.

"What is this, Vance? What has she planted?" Miller demanded, stepping closer to inspect the metal casing.

Arthur stared at the digital timer as the numbers shifted down: 1:59:45... 1:59:44...

"It's not a bomb," Arthur whispered, a cold realization washing over him as he traced the architectural lines of the city grid on the paper.

"It's a digital bypass key. She’s integrated the house's smart system directly into the municipal SCADA grid controlling the entire downtown water supply."

Miller’s face went pale. He keyed his shoulder radio with frantic urgency.

"Dispatch, get Homeland Security and the municipal water board on an emergency conference line right now! We have a critical cyber-infrastructure breach!"

Arthur slowly stood up, holding the blueprint in his trembling hands as he stared down the empty suburban street into the creeping fog.

"She isn't trying to run away, Detective," Arthur said, his voice deadly calm as he watched the timer tick downward.

"She wants the entire city to burn down with us inside it."

Before Miller could respond, the smartphone in Arthur’s pocket vibrated violently, displaying an incoming video call from an unknown, encrypted satellite relay.

Arthur raised his hand, his thumb hovering over the accept button as the screen flashed with Sarah’s cold, unblinking face.
