Chapter 9 - The Ghost of the Past

The heavy rain outside seemed to slow into a steady, rhythmic hiss, as if holding its breath along with everyone inside the house. Maya stared at her grandmother, whose gray curls framed a face carved from pure, unyielding history. The revelation that there was a murder—or something equally dark—hidden in their family tree made the walls of the cozy living room feel like they were closing in.
"Grandma, what are you talking about?" Maya whispered, her voice trembling as she clutched the crumpled birth certificate tighter against her chest. "What brother?"
Arthur stood by the family portraits, his hands clasped neatly behind his back, watching the scene unfold with the detached amusement of a spectator at a theater. "Ah, finally, someone willing to speak the inconvenient truth. Tell her, Martha. Tell your granddaughter about Julian Vance."
Thomas closed his eyes tightly, his grip on Sarah loosening slightly. "Don't, Martha. Leave the dead alone."
"The dead don't stay buried when you build a life on top of their graves, Thomas," Grandmother said, stepping off the final stair and walking slowly into the living room. Her purple dress swept softly against the floorboards. She looked directly at Maya, her eyes filled with a heavy, sorrowful wisdom. "Julian Vance wasn't just Arthur's brother. He was the man Sarah was originally promised to in an arranged corporate merger before she fell in love with Thomas."
Maya looked at her mother, whose face was buried in her hands, her shoulders shaking with grief. "You were supposed to marry Arthur's brother?"
"Julian was a kind man," Sarah managed to choke out through her tears, her voice muffled and broken. "He didn't want the merger any more than I did. We were friends. But the night before the wedding... Julian was found dead at the bottom of the cliff behind the old estate."
"And Thomas was standing right beside him with blood on his hands," Arthur added smoothly, stepping out from the shadows of the hallway. His voice was laced with venomous satisfaction. "Officially, it was ruled an accident. But we all knew the truth. Thomas pushed him to secure Sarah and the family fortune for himself."
Maya felt the room spin. She looked at the man she had called father for twenty years, the man who had sheltered her and hidden her away from the world. The warm, comforting image of him dissolved, replaced by the chilling possibility of a murderer living under the same roof.
"Is that true?" Maya asked, her voice barely a whisper, devoid of anger now, replaced by a hollow, crushing despair. "Did you kill him?"
Thomas opened his eyes, meeting her gaze with a look of profound, agonizing regret. "I didn't push him, Maya. Julian and I fought, yes. But he slipped. I tried to grab his hand, but I wasn't fast enough."
May you like
"A convenient story for a man who spent twenty years hiding in the shadows," Arthur scoffed, walking toward the front door. He paused on the threshold, turning back to look at them all with a chilling smile. "Think about it, Maya. You have until midnight to decide whether you want to live with a fugitive and a liar, or step into the light with family that can actually protect you. The car is idling. Make your choice."
