Chapter 5 - The Face in the Dark

The heavy oak door swung inward, pushed smoothly by an unseen hand as the storm winds rushed into the entryway, swirling dust and rain across the polished hardwood floor. Maya stood her ground, her denim jacket whipping around her dark red dress, refusing to cower despite the sheer terror gripping her throat. In the doorway stood a tall man with piercing gray eyes, sharply cut silver hair, and a tailored black suit that looked completely untouched by the torrential downpour outside.
Arthur Vance smiled, a cold, calculated expression that didn't reach his eyes. He stepped across the threshold, his polished leather shoes leaving a wet footprint on the pristine floor.
"Well, well," Arthur said, his voice smooth, deep, and chillingly polite. "It looks like the family reunion is finally happening. Though I must admit, I expected a warmer welcome after all these years."
Sarah let out a sharp, strangled cry, stumbling backward until her spine hit the living room wall. "Get out of my house, Arthur. You have no right to be here."
"Oh, Sarah, my dear," Arthur replied, his gaze shifting effortlessly from Sarah to the man standing protectively beside Maya. "I have every right. Legally, biologically, and financially. This entire estate—and more importantly, the young lady standing right beside you—belongs to my legacy."
Maya's father stepped forward, his fists clenched tightly at his sides as he glared at the intruder. "You lost any claim to her the moment you tried to bury us in the dark, Arthur. Step back before I throw you out myself."
Arthur chuckled, a low, dismissive sound that only fueled the simmering fury in the room. He didn't even blink at the threat. Instead, he reached into the inner pocket of his dark trench coat, pulling out a thick manila folder tied with a red ribbon.
"You always were a fool, Thomas," Arthur said, addressing Maya's father by name for the first time. "Thinking you could hide behind forged documents and a quiet suburban life. Did you really think Sarah was the only one keeping secrets from this innocent girl?"
Maya turned her head slowly, looking up at Thomas with a look of utter disbelief. "Thomas? Is that your real name? How many other lies have I been living inside?"
Thomas looked down at Maya with a heartbroken expression, opening his mouth to speak, but Arthur interrupted with a chilling revelation.

"Ask him about the night before you were born, Maya," Arthur smiled darkly. "Ask him whose signature is actually on the secondary trust fund that keeps this house from being seized by the bank tomorrow morning."
