Chapter 10 - The Midnight Ultimatum

The heavy oak door remained ajar, letting in the damp chill of the storm and the distant, glowing red tail lights of Arthur’s sedan parked at the end of the driveway. The silence that settled over the living room was suffocating. Arthur was gone, vanishing back into the rainy night as quickly as he had appeared, leaving behind a wake of psychological wreckage that could never be undone.
Maya stood motionless near the entryway, the crumpled birth certificate still clutched in her hand like a lifeline to reality. Her mind was a chaotic storm of conflicting truths and shredded memories. She looked at Thomas, who stood staring down at the floor, his cream sweater vest stained with the tears of the woman he had spent two decades protecting. She looked at Sarah, who sat exhausted against the wall, and her grandmother, whose stern facade had finally cracked, revealing deep, weary lines of regret.
"He gave us until midnight," Maya said, her voice flat and emotionless, cutting through the heavy air. She lifted her wrist to check her watch. It was 11:45 PM. Fifteen minutes.
Thomas slowly raised his head, his eyes red-rimmed and pleading. "Maya, please. You can't believe a word that man says. Arthur is a master manipulator. He destroyed Julian's life, he destroyed my life, and now he wants to destroy yours."
"And you protected me by hiding in the guest house and letting me live a complete lie?" Maya fired back, her voice rising with a sudden surge of bitter resentment. "You let me grow up thinking I had no father, while the real father figure was a ghost trapped in a war of revenge! How is that protecting me, Thomas? That’s not protection. That’s a cage."
Sarah crawled across the floor, reaching out to gently touch the hem of Maya’s dark red dress. "We did it because we loved you, Maya. When you're a parent, you make impossible choices to keep your child breathing. If Arthur had found you when you were little, he would have put you in boarding schools, shaped you into a corporate weapon, stripped away everything that makes you you."
"So you decided to steal my history instead?" Maya asked, tears welling in her eyes again as she looked down at her mother. "You traded one cage for another."
Grandmother stepped forward, placing a warm, trembling hand on Maya's shoulder. Her grip was firm, grounding, yet filled with sorrow. "Your mother made mistakes, child. We all did. But Arthur didn't come back tonight because of the past. He came back because he needs something from you."
Maya blinked, turning her tear-streaked face toward her grandmother. "What could he possibly want from me? I'm just a college student living in a suburban house."
"You're not just a college student," Thomas interrupted, his voice dropping to a harsh, urgent whisper as he stepped closer. "The day Julian died, he didn't just leave a fortune behind. He left a coded ledger containing proof of illegal corporate embezzlement that could destroy Arthur's entire empire. And according to Julian's final will..." Thomas paused, swallowing hard, "...that ledger was legally left to his unborn niece."

Maya froze, her breath catching in her throat as she stared at the folded paper in her hand. "To... to me?"
