Chapter 6 - The Trust Fund Ultimatum

The mention of a secondary trust fund and imminent financial ruin dropped like a lead weight into the already suffocating room. Maya turned her gaze back and forth between Arthur Vance and Thomas, her chest heaving with shallow breaths. The rain continued to batter the roof, but the storm inside the house was infinitely more destructive.
"What is he talking about?" Maya demanded, her voice sharp and trembling as she pointed the crumpled birth certificate at Thomas. "Is this house about to be seized? Are we broke? Is everything we own a lie?"
Thomas swallowed hard, his eyes dropping briefly to the floor before meeting Maya’s gaze with painful honesty. "The house, the cars, everything we have... it was built using a contingency fund set up by my family before we went into hiding. But Arthur is right. The funds were frozen this morning."
"Frozen because I control the parent company," Arthur interjected smoothly, stepping further into the hallway and taking off his leather gloves. He tossed them onto the entryway table with a soft thud. "Every single penny you've lived on for the past twenty years came from an account I secretly monitored. I let you play house, Sarah. I let you think you were safe, just to see how long it would take for your little family to crumble under the weight of reality."
Sarah let out a broken sob, sliding down the wall until she sat flat on the hardwood floor, her orange shirt stained with streaks of spilled tears. "You monster... you knew all along."
"Of course I knew," Arthur said calmly, walking toward the living room and pausing beside the wall of family portraits. He reached out a gloved finger and tapped the glass of a picture frame showing a younger Maya smiling on her tenth birthday. "I’ve watched every milestone. Every school play, every doctor's visit, every heartache. I was always there, shaping the board."
Grandmother finally spoke from the stairs, her voice trembling with an ancient, fierce anger. "You are a sick, twisted man, Arthur. You think you own human lives just because you have a ledger full of numbers?"
"I own what I pay for, Martha," Arthur replied without turning around, his eyes fixed on the portrait. He then turned his cold gaze directly back to Maya. "Which brings us to why I am standing in your foyer tonight, getting my shoes wet. The time for hiding is over, Maya. You have a choice to make."
Maya gripped the edges of her denim jacket, her knuckles turning white. "What choice?"
May you like
Arthur smiled, pulling a single golden key from his pocket and holding it up between his thumb and forefinger. "You can stay here in this crumbling house with a family of liars, facing bankruptcy and ruin by sunrise... or you can come with me, step into your true inheritance, and finally learn the absolute truth about why your mother had to run away from me."
