Chapter 7 - The Choice of Two Evils

The golden key glinted dully under the harsh hallway lights, a tiny symbol of immense power and inescapable imprisonment. Maya stared at it, her mind reeling. Every instinct screamed at her to run, to push past Arthur and out into the torrential rain, yet her feet were rooted to the floorboards. The realization that her entire life had been orchestrated by two warring men—one who lied to protect her, and one who lied to claim her—made her stomach churn.
"I am not going anywhere with you," Maya said, her voice dropping an octave, steady despite the panic fluttering in her chest. "You're a stranger. A ghost from a past my mother tried to bury for a reason."
Arthur's smile didn't fade, though a dangerous glint flickered in his piercing gray eyes. "A stranger? Perhaps. But a stranger holding the mortgage to this house, the medical debts of your grandmother, and the criminal record of the man you call father."
Thomas stiffened instantly, taking a sharp step toward Arthur. "Leave them out of this, Arthur. This was between you and me."
"Nothing is just between you and me anymore, Thomas," Arthur countered coldly. "Not since she found that birth certificate. The secret is out, and secrets have a price. Maya is old enough to understand the ledger now."
Sarah scrambled to her feet, rushing over to grab Maya’s hand with desperate urgency. "Don't listen to him, Maya! He ruins everything he touches! He destroyed my family before you were born, and he will destroy you too!"
"And what did you do, Sarah?" Arthur's voice cut through her plea like a razor. "You stole my child, forged state documents, and condemned this girl to a life built on paranoia and cheap furniture. Who is the real villain here?"
Maya pulled her hand gently out of her mother's grip, stepping back. The action felt like a physical blow to Sarah, who gasped as if she had been struck. Maya looked at both adults—the people who had raised her, loved her, and lied to her every single day of her existence. The trust was entirely gone, replaced by a yawning chasm of doubt.
"You both lied to me," Maya whispered, tears spilling over her lashes again. "Every single person in this house has lied to my face for twenty years. How am I supposed to trust either of you now?"
"Because we love you," Thomas pleaded, his voice cracking with genuine desperation. "Every lie I told, every day I spent hiding in the guest house pretending to be your uncle, was because I couldn't bear the thought of Arthur taking you away from me."

Arthur let out a dry, humorless laugh. "Love? Thomas, you don't even know what love is. You're a coward who hid in the background while Sarah paid the price." Arthur took a step closer to Maya, extending the golden key toward her palm. "Come with me, Maya. I will show you the documents that prove your father isn't the victim here. I will show you the real reason why he was locked away in the first place."
