Chapter 13 - The Shot in the Dark

The tension on the porch was thick enough to cut with a knife. Arthur stood three steps below the threshold, his dark trench coat glistening with rainwater, his smile utterly devoid of warmth. Maya stood firm in the doorway, holding the wooden lockbox tightly against her dark red dress, her long braided hair framing a face of absolute defiance.
"You can't touch us here, Arthur," Thomas said, stepping up beside Maya and putting a protective hand on her shoulder. "The police have already been notified of your trespass."
Arthur let out a low, mocking chuckle. "The police, Thomas? In this county? I own the precinct, the judges, and the ink they use to sign warrants. You really think a local patrol car is going to save you from me?"
Suddenly, the sharp glare of a second set of headlights swept across the front yard from the opposite direction. A sleek, unmarked black SUV roared down the gravel driveway, cutting off Arthur’s sedan and slamming on its brakes with a screech of tires. The passenger door flew open before the vehicle had even come to a complete stop, and a tall man in a plain gray suit stepped out into the rain, holding a metallic briefcase and flashing a silver badge.
"Federal marshals!" the man shouted over the dying rumble of the engine, his voice sharp and authoritative as he strode toward the porch. "Arthur Vance, step away from the residence with your hands where I can see them!"
Arthur’s calm, arrogant demeanor shattered in a fraction of a second. His eyes widened in shock as he spun around to face the federal agent, realizing too late that his corporate empire had finally triggered a higher level of oversight.
"This is a mistake," Arthur snarled, his voice rising in panic as he backed away from the steps. "You have no jurisdiction here!"
"Tell that to the Securities and Exchange Commission, Mr. Vance," the federal agent replied, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt as he closed the distance. "Your offshore accounts were frozen twenty minutes ago. You're under arrest for corporate embezzlement, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice."
Sarah let out a loud, breathless gasp of pure disbelief, sinking against the hallway wall as tears of overwhelming relief streamed down her face. Grandmother smiled weakly, closing her eyes in a silent prayer of gratitude.
Maya stood frozen on the threshold, watching the man who had terrorized her family get pushed against the hood of his own sedan and cuffed by the federal agent. The nightmare that had begun with a single folded paper in the mailbox was finally, miraculously coming to an end.

Arthur turned his head sharply, fixing his venomous gray eyes on Maya one last time before being shoved into the back of the SUV. "You think you won, girl? You don't even know what is hidden inside that box you're holding. Julian didn't just find embezzlement... he found out who really killed our parents."
