Chapter 5 - The Black SUVs Arrive

The twin engines of the black SUVs rumbled with a deep, authoritative purr as the vehicles cut their headlights and coasted silently into the motel’s horseshoe driveway. Heavy doors swung open in unison, and four figures clad in unmarked matte-black tactical gear stepped out into the misty night air. They moved with terrifying synchronicity, each operative carrying suppressed carbines held at a low-ready position.

"Federal recovery team," Miller muttered under her breath, recognizing the standard-issue gear instantly. "That's not local backup, and it's not state police. Those are Vance's personal contractors."

Julian pressed himself tightly against the peeling paint of the motel wall, his eyes darting toward the metal staircase at the end of the breezeway. The path was blocked by the SUVs below, and the opposite wing was a firing zone. He was trapped, just like them.

"Miller, we need to move, now!" Williams hissed, his weapon trembling slightly as he tracked the lead tactical operative, who was already marching purposefully toward the base of the stairs. "If they corner us on this open walkway, we're fish in a barrel."

Inside Room 14, the lock suddenly rattled violently. Clara pulled the door open a crack, her face pale and tear-stained as she peered out into the breezeway.

"The bathroom window," Clara whispered urgently, motioning toward the interior. "It leads out to the utility alley behind the ice machine. We can drop down into the drainage ditch before they secure the perimeter."

Miller didn't waste a second. She grabbed Julian by the collar of his denim jacket, hauling him upright before he could bolt in the opposite direction.

"You're coming with us, Julian," Miller commanded, shoving him toward the open motel room door. "If we die here, you die with us."

Julian stumbled across the threshold, dropping the black duffel bag onto the foot of the sagging double bed. The zipper burst open under the impact, spilling a cascade of thick paper files, digital flash drives, and a heavy, silver-plated pocket watch across the faded quilt.

Miller’s eyes locked onto the pocket watch as she swept past the bed. It was engraved with the initials J.V.—the exact watch Director Vance had worn every single day for the past twenty years.

"Where did you get this?" Miller demanded, freezing in the center of the cramped room.

Julian wiped the blood from his temple, his expression hardening into one of grim realization. "I didn't steal it from Vance, Agent. He dropped it in my office the night I caught him taking cash from the cartel liaison. He's my father."
