Chapter 13 - The Rail Yard Sanctuary

The friction of the steel carabiner screaming along the high-tension utility line generated a shower of hot orange sparks that rained down into the dark abyss above the highway. Miller hung suspended by her tactical harness, her gloved hands gripping the heavy black duffel bag tightly against her chest as the wind whipped violently around her face.

With a bone-jarring clack, the carabiner slammed into the heavy steel anchor bracket at the end of the line, bringing them to an abrupt, breathless halt over the overgrown gravel beds of the abandoned railway yard.

Williams dropped first, hitting the ballast stone with a heavy thud, rolling onto his shoulder, and instantly sweeping his empty hands outward before realizing they were clear of immediate gunfire. He quickly reached up, unhooking Clara and setting her gently on her feet.

"Are you alright?" Williams panted, checking Clara for injuries.

Clara nodded rapidly, gasping for breath as she clutched her bruised ribs. "I'm... I'm okay. Just shaken up."

Miller dropped from the line a second later, landing with practiced precision and immediately unhooking her harness. Julian followed immediately after, sliding down the cable with surprising agility and hitting the gravel hard beside them, gasping for air.

"We made it across," Julian whispered, looking back toward the highway where the distant flashing red and blue lights of responding police cruisers were beginning to swarm the auto shop. "But they'll have the perimeter locked down in less than five minutes."

Miller shouldered the heavy black duffel bag, checking the remaining ammunition in her side holster. "We need a vehicle. There's an old maintenance shed near the freight terminal on the north side of the tracks. The regional railway workers used to store transport carts there."

As they moved cautiously through the labyrinth of rusted boxcars and overgrown railway ties, the heavy silence of the abandoned yard was shattered by the distinct, rhythmic whump-whump of a twin-rotor helicopter passing overhead. A powerful searchlight cut through the darkness, sweeping back and forth across the tracks like a predatory eye.

"Get down!" Miller hissed, shoving Julian and Clara behind the rusted iron chassis of an old grain hopper car.

The helicopter hovered directly over their position, washing the tracks in a blinding white glare. The static-laced sound of a loud-hailer crackled through the night air, echoing off the metal boxcars.

“Attention individuals in the rail yard. This is federal airspace. Surrender immediately or lethal force will be authorized.”

"It's Vance," Julian muttered, gritting his teeth as the searchlight beam danced only a few feet from their hiding spot. "He's using thermal optics from the chopper. They'll spot our body heat within thirty seconds if we don't move."

Miller scanned the surrounding area, spotting the rusted tin roof of the railway maintenance shed fifty yards ahead. The shadows cast by a row of stacked shipping containers offered a narrow, unbroken path of cover all the way to the door.

"On my mark, we sprint for the shed," Miller instructed, her eyes locked on the sweeping beam of the helicopter searchlight. "Do not stop for anything. If you fall, you get up immediately."

Julian looked over at Miller, his eyes reflecting the harsh white glare of the overhead light. "Agent Miller... why are you risking your career—your life—for people you only met two hours ago?"

Miller looked back at him, her expression softening just a fraction beneath the grim determination. "Because the badge I wear isn't supposed to protect corrupt men like your father, Julian. It's supposed to protect people like Clara."

She paused, waiting for the helicopter's searchlight to sweep past their position toward the southern fence line.

"Now... run!" Miller commanded.
