Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Danger

The neon sign of the Flamingo Motel buzzed with a low, electrical hum, casting a sickly pink glow over the cracked asphalt of the parking lot. Agent Miller stood a few feet away, her fingers cold against the aluminum surface of a cherry cola can. She had watched the escalation unfold from the shadows of the rusted iron railing, her instincts instantly screaming that this was not a simple domestic dispute.

Julian gripped the splintered wooden doorframe with white knuckles, his brown beard bristling as he stared down the woman inside. His canvas cap was pulled low, shadowing eyes that flickered with calculated desperation.

"Wrong room, sweetheart, come with me," Julian hissed, his voice dropping an octave as he reached out a calloused hand to snatch Clara by her flannel sleeve.

Clara recoiled, stumbling back against the peeling floral wallpaper of Room 14. Her dark hair was slicked to her forehead with nervous sweat, escaping the frayed elastic of her ponytail. She hauled a heavy, overstuffed black duffel bag onto the mattress, its zipper catching on a fraying lining.

"Take the bag, just leave me alone!" Clara cried out, her breath hitching as she shoved the heavy canvas toward his chest.

Miller stepped forward, her boots clicking sharply on the damp concrete. She planted herself squarely in the narrow threshold, her dark tactical jacket rustling over her crisp white shirt.

"Let her go," Miller said, her tone level, authoritative, and utterly cold. "You're one move from a federal charge."

Julian sneered, his gaze darting to the badge clipped to Miller's belt before rising back to meet her eyes.

"Go back to your room," Julian muttered, his muscles coiling like a struck spring.

Without warning, Julian lunged forward, his shoulder driving straight toward Miller’s midsection. The federal agent didn't flinch. She pivoted on her heel, redirecting his momentum with fluid, brutal efficiency. Utilizing his own weight against him, she swept his legs out from under him and slammed him hard onto the concrete walkway.

Before Julian could draw another breath, Miller dropped her weight, driving her knee squarely into his lower back while pinning his right arm in a painful compliance hold. Her hand darted to her shoulder, pressing firmly against her tactical earpiece.

"Williams, second floor, bring the car around," Miller ordered into her comms, her eyes never leaving the trembling woman inside the room.

Clara dropped to her knees, her fingers clawing frantically at the side pocket of the black duffel bag. She pulled out a heavy manila envelope stamped with classified federal seals, sliding out a stack of photographs that made Miller’s blood run cold.

"He's not here for the money," Clara whispered, her voice cracking as she held up a photograph of Miller's own childhood home. "He's hunting everyone on this list."
