Chapter 2 - Shadows on the Walkway

The damp night air grew heavier as the distant rumble of an unmarked federal sedan echoed across the asphalt of the Flamingo Motel. Julian groaned beneath Miller’s knee, his shoulder blades pressing hard against the gritty concrete, but his eyes remained locked on Clara with a chilling, predatory focus.
"You're making a massive mistake, Agent," Julian gritted out, droplets of sweat beading on his forehead beneath the brim of his cap. "She isn't who you think she is. Check that bag again. Look at the bottom compartment."
Miller tightened her hold slightly, feeling the tension in his muscular frame. She kept her weapon hand free, her instincts screaming that Julian was stalling for time.
"Shut your mouth and stay still," Miller warned, her voice dropping into a register that brook no argument.
Inside the dingy motel room, Clara’s hands shook violently as she scrambled to gather the scattered photographs from the dusty carpet. The yellow light from the flickering vanity lamp cast long, distorted shadows across the peeling floral wallpaper. Among the financial ledgers and forged passports, one specific document caught Miller’s eye from where she knelt over Julian—a federal transfer order bearing the signature of Director Thomas Vance, a man Miller had trusted with her career for over a decade.
"Clara, step away from the bag," Miller commanded, her eyes flicking back to the trembling woman. "Keep your hands where I can see them."
"I didn't steal this," Clara sobbed quietly, clutching a thick bundle of documents to her chest like a shield. "Vance gave it to me. He told me to meet him here with the evidence, but Julian intercepted me twenty minutes before you walked up the stairs."
Julian let out a harsh, bitter laugh that vibrated against the pavement. "She's lying, Agent Williams. Vance sent me to secure the package before she could sell it to the syndicate. You're holding the wrong person."
The screech of tires flared at the edge of the parking lot as the unmarked sedan slid to a halt near the base of the metal staircase. The passenger door flew open, and Agent Williams bounded up the steps, his service weapon drawn and ready for a firefight.
"Got movement on the perimeter," Williams panted, scanning the dark corners of the motel's second-floor balcony. "Miller, headquarters is trying to patch through on the secure line. They're saying there's an active internal security alert on your badge."
Miller’s heart skipped a beat. She looked down at Julian, who suddenly smiled—a slow, terrifying grin that reached all the way to his eyes.

"Look at your comms light, Agent," Julian whispered maliciously. "It's been blinking red for the last three minutes. You aren't arresting me. You've been locked out of the system."
