Chapter 12 - The Rooftop Pursuit

The lead operative squeezed the trigger, but a well-placed round from Williams’ service pistol caught the operative's tactical vest, spinning him sideways and ruining his aim just enough to send the bullet whining harmlessly into the ceiling rafters.

"Move, Miller! Go, go, go!" Williams yelled, firing his last remaining rounds before scrambling backward toward the shelving unit.

Miller grabbed Julian by the arm, hauling him toward the industrial racks as the tactical team regrouped and surged forward into the garage. Together, Miller and Julian scaled the metal shelves, hauling themselves through the roof hatch just as a burst of suppressed fire chewed heavy gouges into the wood right beneath their boots.

Williams scrambled up last, slamming a heavy steel security cover down over the roof hatch and throwing the manual sliding bolt into place just as heavy fists began pounding furiously from the underside.

"That won't hold them for long!" Williams panted, scanning the expanse of the auto shop's corrugated metal roof. "They'll blow the hinges off within two minutes."

The cold night wind whipped their hair as they stood exposed on the dark rooftop. Below them, the highway stretched out into the hazy distance, carrying a steady stream of semi-trucks and late-night commuters moving at high speeds.

Clara was hyperventilating, clutching her knees as she leaned against a brick chimney. "We're trapped again. There's nowhere else to run. The drop to the highway is fifty feet."

Julian dropped the heavy black duffel bag onto the gravel, opening the zipper to ensure the files were still intact. "My father won't let us escape this time. Sterling gave him a direct order: recover the ledger or leave no survivors."

Miller ignored the panic, her tactical mind dissecting their environment with surgical precision. Running parallel to the auto shop roof, suspended by a thick steel utility cable, was a high-voltage power line connecting the industrial block to the regional substation three blocks away.

"There," Miller pointed toward the thick black cable stretching across the dark abyss above the highway.

Williams stared at her in sheer disbelief. "Miller, tell me you aren't thinking what I think you're thinking. That's a high-tension utility line, not a zip-line."

"It's our only way across the highway before their tactical team blows the hatch," Miller insisted, unbuckling a heavy steel rappelling carabiner from her tactical belt. "If we use our gear to rig a harness, we can slide down the incline straight to the abandoned rail yard on the other side."

Behind them, the muffled sound of an explosive charge detonated against the roof hatch. The metal cover bulged upward, showering sparks and twisted shrapnel into the night air.

"They're through the hatch!" Julian yelled, scrambling backward toward the edge of the roof as the first tactical operative emerged from the smoke, raising his carbine.

Miller didn't hesitate. She slammed her carabiner over the thick utility cable, locked the safety gate, and looped her tactical belt through the harness ring.

"Williams, get Clara across! Move, move, move!" Miller ordered, shoving Clara toward the cable.

Williams grabbed Clara, wrapping her arms securely around his torso before hooking his own harness onto the line. With a desperate push off the roof ledge, the two agents and Clara launched themselves out into the dark night air, zipping at breakneck speed along the sagging utility cable high above the roaring traffic of the highway.

On the rooftop behind them, Director Vance stepped out of the smoke from the blown hatch, watching calmly as Miller and her team vanished into the dark horizon. He raised a secure radio to his mouth, his expression cold and resolute.

"This is Director Vance," he spoke into the comms. "Lock down every interstate exit within a fifty-mile radius. Bring in the state police. No one leaves this county alive."
