Chapter 9 - The Third-Floor Sanctuary

Amy pushed gently against the brass heating vent from the inside. The metal grille gave way with a faint click, dropping silently onto the thick Persian rug below. One by one, Eleanor and Amy slipped through the narrow opening into the dimly lit study, landing softly on the carpet. The room smelled of old leather, expensive bourbon, and burning cedar from the dying embers in the massive stone fireplace. Tall bookshelves lined the walls, filled with morocco-bound volumes and framed photographs of corporate mergers and sailing trophies.

In the center of the room stood Julian’s mahogany executive desk, upon which sat a glowing laptop and a stack of legal briefs bearing the red confidentiality seals of the Sterling-Vance merger.

"We don't have much time," Eleanor said, brushing the dust from her dark green dress with sharp, precise movements. She walked over to a heavy oil painting of her late husband hanging above the fireplace, reached up, and tilted the frame slightly to the left. A small digital keypad emerged from the wood-paneled wall behind it. "Julian changed the master archive code last month, but he’s predictable. He always used the date of our company’s first hostile takeover."

Amy stood by the mahogany desk, her eyes scanning the glowing screen of the laptop. The computer wasn't locked; it had been left open to a live satellite feed of the Manhattan skyline outside Le Miroir, alongside an encrypted messaging app that was currently blinking with unread notifications from Chloe Vance. Amy leaned closer, her breath catching as she read the scrolling text messages on the screen.

Chloe: "Does your mother suspect anything about the offshore accounts yet?"

Julian: "The old woman is irrelevant. Once the board votes at nine a.m., she’ll be stripped of her voting shares, and Amy will be legally erased before she can open her mouth."

A cold wave of fury washed over Amy, driving away any lingering hesitation. She picked up a heavy crystal paperweight from the desk, hefting its weight in her hand, and looked across the room at Eleanor, who was furiously punching a sequence of numbers into the wall safe.

"Eleanor," Amy said softly, her voice cutting through the quiet crackle of the fireplace. "He isn't just planning to cut you out of the board. He’s liquidating the entire European subsidiary and pinning the tax evasion charges directly on your name."

Eleanor froze, her fingers hovering over the last digit of the keypad. The color drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking suddenly fragile beneath the harsh glare of the desk lamp. She turned slowly, her eyes wide with shock. "What did you say?"

"Read the messages on his screen," Amy replied, stepping aside to let the older woman see the open laptop. "He used your personal authorization key to transfer forty million dollars into an unbacked shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under your maiden name. If the SEC audits the merger tomorrow morning, you are going to take the fall for the entire fraud."

Before Eleanor could step toward the desk, a heavy thud echoed from the double doors of the study. The brass doorknob turned slowly, clicking twice as someone inserted a heavy skeleton key from the outside.

"Mother," Julian’s cold, smooth voice drifted through the gap as the heavy oak door began to swing open. "I thought I told security to keep you locked in the basement."
