Chapter 10 - The Sovereign’s Gambit

The heavy oak door swung open wide, revealing Julian Sterling standing on the threshold. He wore his black tuxedo jacket unbuttoned, the bow tie slightly askew, his dark hair falling across his forehead with a studied, effortless negligence. He didn't look surprised to see his mother and Amy standing in his private study; instead, a slow, predatory smile touched the corners of his mouth.
"Family reunions at three in the morning," Julian said smoothly, stepping into the room and closing the door softly behind him. "Always so dramatic. I suppose Arthur Pendelton gave you my little welcome package, Amy?"
Eleanor stepped in front of Amy instantly, her posture rigid, her chin held high with the cold authority of a matriarch cornered in her own domain. "You arrogant little fool, Julian. You used my name to launder forty million dollars into an offshore shell company. Do you honestly believe the board will let you walk away clean when the SEC traces those wires back to your desk?"
Julian laughed—a low, dismissive sound that dripped with utter contempt. He walked casually toward the bar cart, pouring himself two fingers of neat amber bourbon without breaking eye contact with his mother.
"The board won't trace anything, Mother, because by nine o'clock this morning, you will have formally resigned due to 'declining health,' and Amy will be half a world away in a private clinic in Zurich, quietly signing away her parental rights under the influence of heavy sedatives," Julian said, taking a slow sip of the liquor. He turned his gaze toward Amy, his eyes hardening. "You should have stayed at Le Miroir, Amy. You were always too soft for this world. Wealth isn't earned by playing by the rules; it’s preserved by eliminating variables."
Amy didn't flinch. She stepped out from behind Eleanor, her hand resting firmly against her stomach, her voice steady and resonant in the quiet room. "You missed one critical variable, Julian. You assumed I came here alone tonight."
Julian’s hand paused halfway to his mouth. For the first time, a flicker of genuine uncertainty crossed his features. He set the glass down on the mahogany desk with a sharp clink. "What are you talking about?"
Before Julian could answer, the heavy mahogany doors of the study flew open behind him with a resounding crash. Four men in dark federal suits stepped into the room, their badges gleaming under the crystal chandelier. At the front stood Arthur Pendelton, flanked by two armed federal marshals and a senior investigator from the Securities and Exchange Commission.
"Julian Sterling," the SEC investigator announced, stepping forward with a thick sheaf of federal arrest warrants in his hand. "You are under arrest for corporate wire fraud, embezzlement of employee pension funds, and international securities manipulation."
Julian spun around, his face draining of all color as the federal agents moved in with practiced precision, their hands dropping to their restraints. He looked from the agents to his mother, whose face remained a mask of cold, unyielding satisfaction.
"You set me up," Julian whispered, his voice cracking with sudden, uncontained panic as the heavy steel cuffs snapped around his wrists with a metallic finality.
May you like
"You built your throne on sand, Julian," Eleanor said quietly, turning her back on her son as the marshals led him toward the door. "And the tide is finally coming in."
