Chapter 12 - The Shattered Foyer

The distant sound of shattering glass reverberated up the grand staircase like a physical shockwave. Amy froze, the platinum key cold against her palm inside her closed fist. Eleanor’s head snapped toward the heavy mahogany study doors, her aristocratic composure fracturing for the first time all night.
"Stay here," Eleanor whispered urgently, moving toward the hallway with surprising speed. "If the federal marshals haven't secured the perimeter yet, someone else has breached the service gates."
Before Eleanor could reach the doorknob, the heavy oak panels burst inward with explosive force. The door slammed against the interior wall, splintering the frame. Standing in the threshold wasn't a federal agent or one of Julian’s loyal security guards. It was Chloe Vance, her gold evening dress torn at the hem, her hair wild around her face, her eyes wide and manic with desperate fury. In her right hand, she gripped a small, heavy silver revolver she had clearly taken from the downstairs trophy case.
"Where is he?" Chloe screamed, her voice echoing shrilly through the vaulted study. "Where did your precious son take my father's investment portfolios before the federal agents dragged him out?"
Eleanor didn't flinch. She stood tall, placing herself directly between the armed woman and Amy, who had retreated into the shadowed corner near the bookshelves. "Julian is gone, Chloe. The federal marshals took him ten minutes ago. Your merger is dead, and your father’s money is already being frozen by the SEC."
Chloe laughed—a high, hysterical sound that lacked any trace of sanity. She raised the revolver, the barrel trembling slightly as it swept across the room before locking directly onto Eleanor’s chest. "You lie! Julian promised me everything! He said the Sterling name was a fortress that nothing could touch!"
"Julian lied to everyone, my dear," Eleanor said smoothly, taking a slow step forward to draw the woman’s attention away from Amy. "That is the family tradition. He used you, just as he used me, and just as he tried to use Amy."
Chloe’s eyes darted toward Amy standing in the shadows, her face contorting with blinding hatred. "It’s her fault! If she had just signed the waiver and walked away quietly like a good little ornament, none of this would have happened!"
With a sudden, explosive movement, Chloe shifted her aim away from Eleanor and pulled the trigger. The deafening crack of the gunshot shattered the quiet of the study, sending a heavy lead slug burying itself into the mahogany bookshelf inches from Amy’s head in a cloud of splinters and dust.

Before Chloe could cock the hammer for a second shot, Eleanor lunged forward with terrifying speed, slamming her weight against Chloe’s arm and sending the revolver clattering across the marble hearth.
